IN THE CASE OF:
BOARD DATE: 13 November 2014
DOCKET NUMBER: AR20140005589
THE BOARD CONSIDERED THE FOLLOWING EVIDENCE:
1. Application for correction of military records (with supporting documents provided, if any).
2. Military Personnel Records and advisory opinions (if any).
THE APPLICANT'S REQUEST, STATEMENT, AND EVIDENCE:
1. The applicant requests correction of his DD Form 214 (Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty) to show he was awarded the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) Medal.
2. The applicant states the NATO Medal was not included on his DD Form 214.
3. The applicant provides a NATO Medal Certificate and DD Form 214 for the period ending 23 March 2014.
CONSIDERATION OF EVIDENCE:
1. On 5 July 2013, the applicant was ordered to active duty from his Reserve component unit in support of Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF).
2. On 23 March 2014, he was honorably released from active duty. The DD Form 214 he was issued for this period of active duty shows he served in Afghanistan from
12 July 2013 through 23 February 2014.
3. His DD Form 214 for the period ending 23 March 2014 shows he was awarded the:
* Afghanistan Campaign Medal with campaign star
* Army Commendation Medal
* National Defense Service Medal
* Army Service Ribbon
* Armed Forces Reserve Medal with M Device
4. The applicant provides a NATO Medal Certificate showing he was awarded the NATO Medal for service with NATO on operations in relation to the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) Operation during the period
5 July 2013 to 9 March 2014.
5. Army Regulation 600-8-22 (Military Awards) states the NATO Medal is awarded by the Secretary-General of NATO members of the Armed Forces of the United States who participate in designated NATO operations. The Secretary of Defense approved acceptance of the NATO Medal for U.S. military personnel who served in the ISAF in Afghanistan (1 June 2003 to a date to be determined).
DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSIONS:
The available evidence supports the applicant's request for correction of his DD Form 214 to show the NATO Medal. The NATO Medal Certificate he provides confirms he received this award for service in support of ISAF operations in Afghanistan. Therefore, he is entitled to correction of his DD Form 214 to show this award.

His DD Form 214 shows no Bronze Star Medal and only a single AAM; therefore, it would be appropriate to correct his DD Form 214 to show he was awarded the Bronze Star Medal and the AAM (3rd Award).
