THE BOARD CONSIDERED THE FOLLOWING EVIDENCE:

THE APPLICANT'S REQUEST, STATEMENT, AND EVIDENCE:
1. The applicant requests correction of his DD Form 214 (Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty) to show the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) Medal.
2. The applicant states the NATO Medal was omitted from his DD Form 214.
3. The applicant provides copies of:
* NATO Medal Certificate for the period 31 August 2013 to 25 January 2014
* DD Form 214 (Member copies 1 and 4) with Continuation Sheet
CONSIDERATION OF EVIDENCE:
1. At the time of his application, the applicant was a sergeant, pay grade E-5, U.S. Army Reserve.
2. On 31 August 2013, the applicant was ordered to active duty in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. He was assigned for duty in Afghanistan during the period 29 September 2013 to 29 January 2014.
3. On 22 February 2014, the applicant was released from active duty. He completed 5 months and 22 days of creditable active duty service during this period. His DD Form 214 shows his awards as:
* Afghanistan Campaign Medal with bronze service star
* Army Commendation Medal
* Army Achievement Medal
* National Defense Service Medal
* Global War on Terrorism Service Medal
* Noncommissioned Officer Professional Development Ribbon
* Army Service Ribbon
* Armed Forces Reserve Medal with "M" Device
4. A NATO Medal Certificate, as provided by the applicant and filed in his Official Military Personnel File, states he was awarded the Non-Article 5 NATO Medal for service with NATO in relation to the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) Operation during the period 31 August 2013 to 25 January 2014.
5. Army Regulation 600-8-22 (Military Awards) states the NATO Medal was authorized by the Secretary-General of NATO for specific NATO operations. The Secretary of Defense may approve acceptance and wear by U.S. service members who meet the criteria specified by the Secretary-General of NATO. Current operational campaign medals, to include the ISAF, will continue to be awarded to those personnel who apply within two years of departing the operational area.
DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSIONS:
1. The applicant contends that his DD Form 214 should be corrected to show his award of the NATO Medal.
2. The available evidence shows the applicant served in Afghanistan and was awarded the NATO Medal for service in 2013-2014. Therefore, this medal should be shown on his DD Form 214.
