IN THE CASE OF:
BOARD DATE: 1 September 2015
DOCKET NUMBER: AR20150001369
THE BOARD CONSIDERED THE FOLLOWING EVIDENCE:
1. Application for correction of military records (with supporting documents provided, if any).
2. Military Personnel Records and advisory opinions (if any).
THE APPLICANT'S REQUEST, STATEMENT, AND EVIDENCE:
1. The applicant requests correction of his DD Form 214 (Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty) for the period ending on 19 February 2014 to show he was awarded the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) Medal.
2. He states the supporting documentation was not available at the time he was issued the DD Form 214.
3. He provides his DD Form 214 and a NATO Medal Certificate.
CONSIDERATION OF EVIDENCE:
1. On 3 September 2013, the applicant was ordered to active duty from his Reserve Component unit in support of Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF).
2. On 19 February 2014, he was honorably released from active duty. The
DD Form 214 he was issued for this period of active duty shows he served in Afghanistan from 2 October 2013 through 29 January 2014.
3. His DD Form 214 for the period ending on 19 February 2014 shows he was awarded the:
* Afghanistan Campaign Medal with campaign star
* Army Commendation Medal
* National Defense Service Medal
* Global War on Terrorism Service Medal
* Army Service Ribbon
* Armed Forces Reserve Medal with M Device
4. Headquarters, Task Force Oracle, 338th Military Intelligence Battalion, Permanent Orders Number 14-038-001, dated 7 February 2014, show the applicant was awarded the Army Achievement Medal (AAM) for his outstanding service from 24 December 2013 to 4 January 2014 while deployed in in support of OEF.
5. The applicant provides a NATO Medal Certificate showing he was awarded the NATO Medal for service with NATO on operations in relation to the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) Operation during the period
31 August 2013 to 25 January 2014.
6. Army Regulation 600-8-22 (Military Awards) states the NATO Medal is awarded by the Secretary-General of NATO members of the Armed Forces of the United States who participate in designated NATO operations. The Secretary of Defense approved acceptance of the NATO Medal for U.S. military personnel who served in the ISAF in Afghanistan (1 June 2003 to a date to be determined).
DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSIONS:
1. The available evidence supports the applicant's request for correction of his DD Form 214 to show the NATO Medal. The NATO Medal Certificate he provides confirms he received this award for service in support of ISAF operations in Afghanistan. Therefore, he is entitled to correction of his
DD Form 214 to show this award.
2. Permanent orders verify he was awarded the AAM. Therefore, he is entitled to correction of his DD Form 214 to show this award.
