		IN THE CASE OF:

		BOARD DATE: 2 August 2012

		DOCKET NUMBER: AR20120002845

THE BOARD CONSIDERED THE FOLLOWING EVIDENCE:

1. Application for correction of military records (with supporting documents provided, if any).

2. Military Personnel Records and advisory opinions (if any).

THE APPLICANT'S REQUEST, STATEMENT, AND EVIDENCE:

1. The applicant requests correction of his DD Form 214 (Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty), item 11 (Primary Specialty Number, Title, Years and Months in Specialty) to show he completed 3 years, 3 months, and 19 days of service in military occupational specialty (MOS) 11B (Infantryman).

2. The applicant states he held MOS 11B during his entire period of active service.

3. The applicant provides a copy of his DD Form 214 and Enlisted Record Brief.

CONSIDERATION OF EVIDENCE:
1. The applicant enlisted in the Regular Army on 15 July 2008.
2. He completed 4 months and 11 days of initial entry training (Basic Combat Training (BCT) and Advanced Individual Training (AIT)). Following training, he was assigned to Company A, 4th Battalion, 31st Infantry, Fort Drum, NY for duty in MOS 11B.

3. The applicant was honorably released from active duty on 3 November 2011. He had completed 3 years, 3 months, and 19 days of creditable active service. His DD Form 214 shows in item 11 "11B1O INFANTRYMAN – 2 YRS 11 MOS// NOTHING FOLLOWS."

4. Army Regulation 635-5 (Separation Documents) establishes the standardized policy for preparing and distributing the DD Form 214. The DD Form 214 is a summary of a Soldier's most recent period of continuous active service to include attendance at BCT and AIT. Item 11 shows the titles of all MOS's served for at least 1 year and includes the number of years and months served for each MOS. For time determination, 16 days or more count as 1 month. BCT and AIT are not counted.

DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSIONS:

1. The applicant completed 4 months and 11 days of BCT and AIT. He appears to have been awarded MOS 11B upon completion of training. He also appears to have held and served in that MOS until he was honorably released from active service on 3 November 2011.

2. Although he completed 3 years, 3 months, and 19 days of creditable active service, he was awarded the MOS after he completed the required training, which was 4 months and 11 days. Therefore, he was appropriately given credit for holding the MOS for 2 years and 11 months. The time that he spent acquiring the MOS is not counted.

3. In view of the foregoing, there is no basis for granting the applicant's request.

BOARD VOTE:

________ ________ ________ GRANT FULL RELIEF

________ ________ ________ GRANT PARTIAL RELIEF

________ ________ ________ GRANT FORMAL HEARING

___X ___ ___X____ ___X ___ DENY APPLICATION

BOARD DETERMINATION/RECOMMENDATION:

The evidence presented does not demonstrate the existence of a probable error or injustice. Therefore, the Board determined the overall merits of this case are insufficient as a basis for correction of the records of the individual concerned.
