      IN THE CASE OF:

      BOARD DATE: 9 March 2006
      DOCKET NUMBER: AR20050010290

I certify that hereinafter is recorded the true and complete record
of the proceedings of the Army Board for Correction of Military Records in
the case of the above-named individual.

| |Mr. Carl W. S. Chun | |Director |
| |Mr. Joseph A. Adriance | |Analyst |

The following members, a quorum, were present:

| |Mr. Richard T. Dunbar | |Chairperson |
| |Ms. Jeanette B. McPherson | |Member |
| |Mr. David W. Tucker | |Member |

The Board considered the following evidence:

Exhibit A - Application for correction of military records.

Exhibit B - Military Personnel Records (including advisory opinion,
if any).

THE APPLICANT'S REQUEST, STATEMENT, AND EVIDENCE:

1. The applicant requests, in effect, correction of Item 12d (Total Prior
Active Service) of his 30 August 2002 and 26 April 2004 separation
documents
(DD Forms 214).

2. The applicant states, in effect, that Item 12d of the DD Forms 214 in
question does not accurately reflect the total prior service he had
completed of the date the DD Forms 214 in question were issued.

3. The applicant provides the following documents in support of his
application: DD Form 214, effective 14 July 2000; DD Form 214, effective 8
August 2001;
DD Form 214, effective 30 August 2002; DD Form 214, effective 26 April
2004; and Human Resources Command (HRC)-St. Louis Memorandum, dated 10 July
2005.

CONSIDERATION OF EVIDENCE:

1. On 17 May 2000, the applicant was appointed a first lieutenant (1LT) in
the Chaplain Corps of the United States Army Reserve (USAR). He was
promoted to captain (CPT) on 2 August 2004. As of the date of his
application to the Board, the applicant remained serving as a CPT in the
USAR.

2. The applicant's record contains a DD Form 214 that documents the
applicant's 1 month and 10 days of active duty service from 5 June 2000
through 14 July 2000. Item 12d of this document contains an entry
indicating the applicant had no prior active duty service.

3. The applicant's record also contains a DD Form 214 that documents his
25 days of active duty service from 14 July 2001 through 8 August 2001.
Item 12d of this document contained an entry indicating that he completed 1
month and 10 days of prior active service at that time.

4. The applicant's record also contains a DD Form 214 that documents his
24 days of active duty service from 7 August 2002 through 30 August 2002.
Item 12d of this document contains an entry that indicates he had completed
no prior active duty service at that time.

5. The applicant's record also includes a DD Form 214 that documents the
1 year, 2 months, and 20 days of active duty service he completed from
7 February 2003 through 26 April 2004. Item 12d of this document contains
an entry that indicates he had completed 24 days of active duty service at
that time.
6. Army Regulation 635-5 (Separation Documents) prescribes the separation
documents that must be prepared for Soldiers on retirement, discharge,
release from active duty service, or control of the Active Army. It also
establishes standardized policy for preparing and distributing the DD Form
214. Chapter 2 contains item-by-item preparation instructions. The
instructions for Item 12d state, in pertinent part, that the total of all
prior periods of active duty service should be entered in this item.

DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSIONS:

1. The applicant's claim that his DD Forms 214 do not accurately reflect
his prior active duty service in Item 12d, and the supporting documents he
submitted were carefully considered and found to have merit. By
regulation, the total of all prior periods of active duty service should be
entered in Item 12d of the DD Form 214.

2. The applicant's record confirms that at the time he was issued the 30
August 2002 DD Form 214, he had completed a total of 2 months and 5 days of
prior active duty service. Therefore, Item 12d of this DD Form 214 should
be corrected accordingly.

3. The applicant's record confirms that at the time he was issued the 26
April 2004 DD Form 214, he had completed a total of 2 months and 29 days of
prior active duty service. Therefore, Item 12d of this DD Form 214 should
be corrected accordingly.
