		IN THE CASE OF:

		BOARD DATE: 2 September 2014

		DOCKET NUMBER: AR20130021078

THE BOARD CONSIDERED THE FOLLOWING EVIDENCE:

1. Application for correction of military records (with supporting documents provided, if any).

2. Military Personnel Records and advisory opinions (if any).

THE APPLICANT'S REQUEST, STATEMENT, AND EVIDENCE:

1. The applicant requests correction of his DD Form 214 (Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty) to show his period of service in Afghanistan.

2. The applicant states he served in Afghanistan during Operation Enduring Freedom but the entry of this period of service was not included on his DD Form 214.

3. The applicant provides copies of his DD Form 214 and 2010 deployment orders.

CONSIDERATION OF EVIDENCE:

1. The applicant served honorably in the Regular Army from 5 January 2010 through 26 January 2013.

2. 101st Airborne Division Orders CP-201-0064, dated 20 July 2010, directed the applicant's deployment to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom on 20 August 2010 for a period not to exceed 365 days.

3. A review of the applicant’s pay records shows he hostile fire/imminent danger pay (HF/IDP) and Combat Zone Tax exemption (CZTE) for the period 22 August 2010 through 7 August 2011.

4. The applicant's DD Form 214 does not show any foreign service at block 12f (Foreign Service) and does not record the applicant's deployment in Afghanistan at block 18 (Remarks).

5. Army Regulation 635-5 (Separation Documents) in effect at the time stated the DD Form 214 is a synopsis of the Soldier's most recent period of continuous active duty. It provides a brief, clear-cut record of active Army service at the time of release from active duty, retirement, or discharge. Chapter 2 contains guidance on the preparation of the DD Form 214. It states for:

	a. block 12f, enter the total amount of foreign service completed during the period covered by the DD Form 214, and

	b. block 18, for a Soldier deployed to a foreign country, enter the following statement "SERVICE IN (NAME OF COUNTRY DEPLOYED) FROM (inclusive dates for example, YYYYMMDD - YYYYMMDD)."

DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSIONS:

The applicant's service in Afghanistan is not recorded on his DD Form 214. It would be appropriate to correct his DD Form 214 as recommended below.

The evidence of record partially supports the applicant's request for correction of item 12f of his DD Form 214. There is no evidence indicating the applicant was actually deployed to Afghanistan for 9 months. In light of the available evidence, it would be appropriate to correct item 12f of his DD Form 214 to show he had 3 months and 8 days of foreign service.
