IN THE CASE OF:
BOARD DATE: 1 JULY 2010
DOCKET NUMBER: AR20090021737
THE BOARD CONSIDERED THE FOLLOWING EVIDENCE:
1. Application for correction of military records (with supporting documents provided, if any).
2. Military Personnel Records and advisory opinions (if any).
THE APPLICANT'S REQUEST, STATEMENT, AND EVIDENCE:
1. The applicant requests correction of the entry NA in item 27 (Reentry Code) of his DD Form 214 (Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty).
2. The applicant states he attempted to find out his eligibility for the military medical school scholarship program. However, the recruiter told him that NA or Not Applicable is not a valid code to determine eligibility for reentry.
3. The applicant provides a copy of his DD Form 214.
CONSIDERATION OF EVIDENCE:
1. The applicant enlisted in the U.S. Army Reserve (USAR) on 23 April 2001.
2. He was ordered to active duty on 9 November 2006 in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.
3. The applicant was released from active duty on 8 November 2008 under the provisions of Army Regulation 635-200 (Personnel Separations - Active Duty Enlisted Administrative Separations), chapter 4, by reason of completion of required active service. Item 27 of his DD Form 214 shows the entry NA.
4. Army Regulation 635-5 (Separation Documents) governs the preparation of the DD Form 214. It states that the DD Form 214 is a synopsis of the Soldier's
most recent period of continuous active duty. It provides a brief, clear-cut record of active Army service at the time of release from active duty, retirement, or discharge.
5. Army Regulation 635-5, paragraph 2-4 (Completing the DD Form 214), provides detailed instructions and source document(s) for completing each block of the DD Form 214. The regulation states that Army Regulation 601-210 determines Regular Army and USAR reentry eligibility and provides regulatory guidance on the RE codes. These codes are not applicable to officers, U.S. Military Academy (USMA) cadets who fail to graduate or enter USMA from active duty status, or to Reserve Component Soldiers being separated for other than cause.
DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSIONS:
1. The applicant states the recruiter told him that NA or Not Applicable is not a valid code to determine eligibility for reentry. However, the applicants service record does not indicate that an error or injustice exists in this case.
2. The applicant was ordered to active duty on 9 November 2006 in a Reserve status. He was released from active duty on 8 November 2008 under the provisions of Army Regulation 635-200, chapter 4 by reason of completion of required active service.
3. The applicants DD Form 214 shows the entry "NA" in item 27 (Reentry Code). Based on Army Regulation 635-5, RE codes are not applicable to Reserve Component Soldiers being separated for other than cause. The applicant was not separated for cause; therefore, the applicants DD Form 214 properly reflects the appropriate entry of NA in item 27 and there is no basis for correction of his DD Form 214.

The applicant requests correction of item 27 (Reentry (RE) Code) of his DD Form 214 (Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty) to show the entry "1A" instead of "NA." The evidence of record shows the applicant was a USAR Soldier who entered ADT on 23 February 2011 and upon completion of his training, he was released from active duty on 8 July 2011 for completion of required service in accordance with chapter 4 of Army Regulation 635-200. There is no evidence that he was...

The applicant requests correction of her DD Form 214 (Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty) to show her reentry eligibility (RE) code as "1." Pertinent Army regulations provide that individuals will be assigned RE codes prior to discharge or release from active duty based on their service records or the reason for discharge. His record contains two DD Forms 214. a. The regulation states for item 27, Army Regulation 601-210 (Active and Reserve Components (RC) Enlistment Program) determines RA and USAR reentry eligibility and provides regulatory guidance on the RE codes.

The applicant requests that her reentry (RE) code on her DD Form 214 (Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty) with the ending period 23 December 2003 be corrected. However, evidence of record shows that her DD Form 214 with the ending period 23 December 2004 shows that she was discharged due to parenthood. Therefore, the RE code of "NA" on her DD Form 214 is correct.

The applicant states her separation document lacks the appropriate separation and RE codes for an honorably discharged Soldier. The DD Form 214 is a summary of a Soldier's most recent period of continuous active duty to include attendance at basic and advanced training and is prepared for all personnel at the time of their retirement, discharge, or release from active duty. The evidence of record shows she was a USAR Soldier who was separated from active duty, upon completion of AIT by a...
