		IN THE CASE OF:

		BOARD DATE: 23 June 2015

		DOCKET NUMBER: AR20140016241

THE BOARD CONSIDERED THE FOLLOWING EVIDENCE:

1. Application for correction of military records (with supporting documents provided, if any).

2. Military Personnel Records and advisory opinions (if any).

THE APPLICANT'S REQUEST, STATEMENT, AND EVIDENCE:

1. The applicant requests correction of his DD Form 214 (Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty) to show his foreign service.

2. The applicant states his service in Afghanistan is not shown on his DD Form 214. He states he is applying for disability for injuries he sustained while he was in the service.

3. The applicant provides a copy of his DD Form 214.

CONSIDERATION OF EVIDENCE:

1. The applicant enlisted in the Army for 3 years on 22 October 2009. He completed training as a combat engineer.

2. After completing 3 years, 4 months, and 12 days of net active service this period, he was honorably released from active duty (REFRAD) upon completion of his required active service.

3. Item 18 (Remarks) on his DD Form 214 shows he served in Afghanistan from 15 March 2011 through 14 March 2012. However, item 12f (Foreign Service) on his DD Form 214 does not show any foreign service.

4. Army Regulation 635-5 (Separation Documents) as then in effect, prescribed the separation documents prepared for Soldiers upon retirement, discharge, or release from active military service or control of the Army. It established standardized policy for the preparation of the DD Form 214. It stated the DD Form 214 is a synopsis of the Soldier’s most recent period of continuous active duty. It provided a brief, clear-cut record of active Army service at the time of REFRAD, retirement or discharge. It stated that from the Enlisted Record Brief, enter the total amount of foreign service completed during the period covered by the DD Form 214 in item 12f.

DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSIONS:

The available evidence shows he served in Afghanistan from 15 March 2011 through 14 March 2012 (1 year). Item 12f on his DD Form 214 should be corrected to show his foreign service.

BOARD VOTE:
