THE BOARD CONSIDERED THE FOLLOWING EVIDENCE:

1.  Application for correction of military records (with supporting documents provided, if any).

2.  Military Personnel Records and advisory opinions (if any).


THE APPLICANT'S REQUEST, STATEMENT, AND EVIDENCE:

1.  The applicant requests correction of his DD Form 214 (Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty) to show award of the Valorous Unit Award (VUA) and Army Commendation Medal (ARCOM).

2.  The applicant states he would like to update his awards to include the VUA and ARCOM.

3.  The applicant provides:

* orders, citation, and certificate for the VUA
* DD Form 214

CONSIDERATION OF EVIDENCE:

1.  The applicant enlisted in the Regular Army on 12 January 2009.  He served as an infantryman in Afghanistan from 4 February 2010 to 5 February 2011.

2.  His records contain 3d Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), Afghanistan, Permanent Order 308-040, dated 4 November 2010, showing he was awarded the Combat Infantryman Badge for being engaged by or engaging the enemy on 28 August 2010.

3.  His records contain Headquarters, 3d Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), Afghanistan, Permanent Order Number 026-001, dated 26 January 2011, showing he was awarded the ARCOM with "V" Device for valorous achievement on 28 August 2010 in Afghanistan.

4.  On 5 March 2012, he was discharged.

5.  His DD Form 214 does not show the ARCOM or VUA as authorized awards.

6.  He provided U.S. Army Human Resources Command, Fort Knox, KY, Permanent Order 141-17, dated 21 May 2013, showing Headquarters, 3d Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) was awarded the VUA for extraordinary heroism in action against an armed enemy during the period 1 April 2010 to 31 August 2010 in Afghanistan.

DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSIONS:

1.  Permanent orders show he was awarded the ARCOM with "V" Device.  Therefore, his DD Form 214 should be corrected to show this award.

2.  His unit in Afghanistan was awarded the VUA while he was assigned to it.  Therefore, his DD Form 214 should be corrected to show this unit award.
