THE BOARD CONSIDERED THE FOLLOWING EVIDENCE:

THE APPLICANT'S REQUEST, STATEMENT, AND EVIDENCE:
1. The applicant requests his Social Security Number (SSN) be corrected on his DD Form 214 (Report of Transfer or Discharge).
2. The applicant states his SSN is incorrect. The last digit should be listed as "5," not "2."
3. The applicant provides copies of his social security card and DD Form 214.
CONSIDERATION OF EVIDENCE:
1. Title 10, U.S. Code, section 1552(b), provides that applications for correction of military records must be filed within 3 years after discovery of the alleged error or injustice. This provision of law also allows the Army Board for Correction of Military Records (ABCMR) to excuse an applicant's failure to timely file within the 3-year statute of limitations if the ABCMR determines it would be in the interest of justice to do so. While it appears the applicant did not file within the time frame provided in the statute of limitations, the ABCMR has elected to conduct a substantive review of this case and, only to the extent relief, if any, is granted, has determined it is in the interest of justice to excuse the applicant's failure to timely file. In all other respects, there are insufficient bases to waive the statute of limitations for timely filing.
2. The applicant served in the Army of the United States from 2 December 1964 through 30 September 1966.
3. During the period of the applicant's service the principle identification number used was the Army Service Number. However, his record does contain a
DD Form 47 (Report of Induction) listing an SSN ending with "5."
4. The applicant's DD Form 214 reflects an SSN ending with "2."
5. The social security card the applicant provided shows an SSN ending with "5."
6. Army Regulation 635-5 (Personnel Separations - Separation Documents) prescribes the separation documents prepared for Soldiers upon retirement, discharge, or release from active military service or control of the Army. It establishes standardized policy for preparation of the DD Form 214. It states the transition point is to ensure all information on the DD Form 214 and other separation documents is accurate. The DD Form 214 is of vital importance to the separating Soldier and must be properly prepared according to prescribed guidance.
DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSIONS:
1. The applicant contends the last digit of his SSN on his DD Form 214 should be listed as "5." However, his DD Form 214 lists a "2" as the last digit.
2. During the applicant's period of service the principle identification number used was the Army Service Number.
3. He provides a social security card that shows a "5" as the last digit of his SSN and his record contains a DD Form 47 that lists a "5" as the last digit of his SSN.
4. It appears a typographical error occurred when the applicant's SSN was entered on his DD Form 214, and available evidence is sufficient to correct this error.
