		IN THE CASE OF:

		BOARD DATE: 13 October 2011

		DOCKET NUMBER: AR20110008149

THE BOARD CONSIDERED THE FOLLOWING EVIDENCE:

1. Application for correction of military records (with supporting documents provided, if any).

2. Military Personnel Records and advisory opinions (if any).

THE APPLICANT'S REQUEST, STATEMENT, AND EVIDENCE:

1. The applicant requests that her two tours of duty in Germany and her tour of duty in Turkey be added to item 18 (Remarks) of her DD Form 214 (Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty).

2. The applicant states she has 5 years, 10 months, and 20 days of overseas service as shown in item 12f (Foreign Service) of her DD Form 214. The clerk who prepared her DD Form 214 did not add the overseas tours to item 18.

3. The applicant provides:

* her Enlisted Record Brief (ERB)
* two certificates for award of the Army Achievement Medal
* a citation for the award of the Joint Service Commendation Medal

CONSIDERATION OF EVIDENCE:

1. She retired from the Regular Army on 30 September 2010, having completed 22 years, 7 months, and 21 days of active service.

2. Item 12f of her DD Form 214 shows she completed 5 years, 10 months, and 20 days of foreign service.

3. Item 18 does not contain any entries showing deployment overseas.

4. Her ERB shows she completed two tours of duty in Germany and one tour of duty in Turkey.

5. Army Regulation 635-5 (Separation Documents) provides that when an active duty Soldier is deployed with his or her unit during the period covered by the DD Form 214, an entry will be made in item 18 to show the name of the country deployed to and the inclusive dates in YYYY/MM/DD format.

DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSIONS:

Her ERB supports her contention that she completed a total of three tours overseas. It shows she completed two tours in Germany and one tour in Turkey. However, only when a Soldier was deployed to a foreign country is an entry made in item 18 of the DD Form 214 showing the country deployed to and the inclusive dates. Tours of duty based on assignment to a foreign country are not entered in item 18. Therefore, there is no basis to grant relief in this case.

BOARD VOTE:

________ ________ ________ GRANT FULL RELIEF

________ ________ ________ GRANT PARTIAL RELIEF

________ ________ ________ GRANT FORMAL HEARING

____X____ ___X_____ ____X____ DENY APPLICATION

BOARD DETERMINATION/RECOMMENDATION:

The evidence presented does not demonstrate the existence of a probable error or injustice. Therefore, the Board determined that the overall merits of this case are insufficient as a basis for correction of the records of the individual concerned.

Item 13 of her DD Form 214 already shows an award of the Army Achievement Medal.
