		BOARD DATE: 17 June 2010

		DOCKET NUMBER: AR20100000074

THE BOARD CONSIDERED THE FOLLOWING EVIDENCE:

1. Application for correction of military records (with supporting documents provided, if any).

2. Military Personnel Records and advisory opinions (if any).

THE APPLICANT'S REQUEST, STATEMENT, AND EVIDENCE:

1. The applicant requests correction of his DD Form 214 (Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty) to show the narrative reason for separation as “Release from Active Duty” instead of “Release from Active Duty Training.”

2. The applicant states he was ordered to active duty in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF), not for training.

3. The applicant provides a copy of his DD Form 214 for the period ending
12 November 2009.

CONSIDERATION OF EVIDENCE:

1. The applicant’s records show he enlisted in the Alabama Army National Guard (ALARNG) on 22 December 2003. He subsequently entered active duty for training (ADT), completed basic combat and advanced individual training, and he was awarded military occupational specialty 44B (Metal Worker). He was honorably released from ADT on 13 September 2005.

2. On 31 October 2008, he was ordered to active duty in support of OIF and he subsequently served in Kuwait/Iraq from 22 December 2008 to 19 October 2009. He was honorably released from active duty on 12 November 2009. He completed 1 year and 12 days of active service during this period. Item 23 (Narrative Reason for Separation) of his DD Form 214 for this period shows the entry “Release from Active Duty Training.”

3. Army Regulation 635-5 (Separation Documents) establishes the standardized policy for preparing and distributing the DD Form 214. The purpose of the separation document is to provide the individual with documentary evidence of their military service. It is important that information entered on the form be complete and accurate. Chapter 2 contains guidance on the preparation of the DD Form 214. Item 23 shows the type of separation as appropriate (Release from active duty; Discharge; Retirement; Release from active duty and order to active duty in another status; Release from ADT; Release from custody and control of the Army; or Release from ADT and discharge from the Reserve of the Army and return to the ARNG.

DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSIONS:

The evidence of record shows he was ordered to active duty in support of OIF, not for ADT, on 31 October 2008. Upon his release from active duty on 12 November 2009, his DD Form 214 erroneously listed his type of separation as “Release from Active Duty Training.” Therefore, his DD Form 214 should be corrected to reflect his type of separation should as "Release from Active Duty."

BOARD VOTE:

BOARD DETERMINATION/RECOMMENDATION:

   a. deleting from item 23 of his DD Form 214 for the period ending
12 November 2009 the entry “Release from Active Duty Training” and
