		IN THE CASE OF:

		BOARD DATE: 23 DECEMBER 2008

		DOCKET NUMBER: AR20080017349

THE BOARD CONSIDERED THE FOLLOWING EVIDENCE:

1. Application for correction of military records (with supporting documents provided, if any).

2. Military Personnel Records and advisory opinions (if any).

THE APPLICANT'S REQUEST, STATEMENT, AND EVIDENCE:

1. The applicant requests, in effect, that a duplicate copy of her Bronze Star Medal certificate be removed from her Official Military Personnel File (OMPF).

2. The applicant essentially states she has only been awarded one Bronze Star Medal, but that two copies of her Bronze Star Medal certificate are posted on her OMPF.

3. The applicant provides a copy of her Bronze Star Medal certificate in support of this application.

CONSIDERATION OF EVIDENCE:

1. The applicant is currently a staff sergeant on active duty in the Regular Army.

2. A review of the applicantÂ’s OMPF shows that two copies of her Bronze Star Medal are posted to her OMPF. The integrated Personnel Electronic Records Management System (iPERMS) shows that one was effective 6 May 2008, which is the correct effective date, and the other certificate was effective 6 May 2007, which is redundant.

3. The two Bronze Star Certificates posted on her OMPF are identical and cover the period from 18 May 2007 to 31 July 2008, the period she served in Iraq. However, one of the certificates was posted to her OMPF effective 6 May 2007, which is 1 year prior to the date of the award.

DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSIONS:

The evidence of record clearly shows that two copies of her Bronze Star Medal are posted to her OMPF, with the redundant copy incorrectly being shown as effective 6 May 2007. Therefore, it would be appropriate at this time to remove the duplicate copy of her Bronze Star Medal certificate, effective 6 May 2007, from her OMPF.

BOARD VOTE:

___X_____ ___X_____ ___X_____ GRANT FULL RELIEF

________ ________ ________ GRANT PARTIAL RELIEF

________ ________ ________ GRANT FORMAL HEARING

________ ________ ________ DENY APPLICATION

BOARD DETERMINATION/RECOMMENDATION:

1. The Board determined that the evidence presented was sufficient to warrant a recommendation for relief. As a result, the Board recommends that all Department of the Army records of the individual concerned be corrected by removing the duplicate copy of her Bronze Star Medal certificate, shown on her OMPF as effective 6 May 2007, from her OMPF.

2. The Board wants to thank the applicant for her continued service to our Nation. The applicant and all Americans should be justifiably proud of her honorable service in arms.

The applicant requests that one of his Bronze Star Medal award certificates be expunged from his Official Military Personnel File (OMPF). It is reasonable to conclude that had the awards authority been aware in October 2003 that the applicant's achievement in Iraq had already been recognized by the Bronze Star Medal awarded in April 2003 the October award would not have been published. The evidence available to the Board suggests that the applicant has been attempting since at least May...
