THE APPLICANT'S REQUEST, STATEMENT, AND EVIDENCE:
1. The applicant requests award of the Korea Defense Service Medal (KDSM).
2. The applicant states she served in the Republic of Korea from
10 August 2001 to 9 August 2002.
3. The applicant provides a copy of her DD Form 214 (Certificate of
Release or Discharge from Active Duty), orders and Enlisted Record Brief
(ERB).
CONSIDERATION OF EVIDENCE:
1. The applicant’s record shows she enlisted in the Regular Army on
13 February 1980. She served in the Republic of Korea from 10 August 2001
to 9 August 2002. She was discharged on 30 October 2005 for the purpose of
retirement.
2. Orders dated 29 April 2002, reassigned the applicant from Korea to Fort
Belvoir, Virginia. Her report date was listed as 20 September 2002.
3. The applicant’s Noncommissioned Officer Evaluation Report from the
period June 2001 through May 2002 lists her unit, organization and
station as Headquarters and Headquarters Detachment, 501st Military
Intelligence Brigade. The evaluation report verifies that she was assigned
to Yong San, Korea. Additionally, the applicant’s ERB shows her last
assignment as Yong San, Korea.
4. Army Human Resources Command Message (Date Time Group
9 February 2004) published implementing instructions for award of the Korea
Defense Service Medal. This message specified criteria for the award of
the Korea Defense Service Medal as follows: a) service members of the
armed forces must have served in support of the defense of the Republic of
Korea from 28 July 1954 through a future date to be determined by the
Secretary of Defense; b) the area of eligibility encompasses all land area
of the Republic of Korea, and the contiguous water out to 12 nautical
miles, and all air spaces above the land and water areas; c) service
members must have been mobilized with units or assigned or attached to
units operating in the area of eligibility and have been physically
deployed in the area of eligibility for 30 consecutive or 60 non-
consecutive days.
DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSIONS:
The applicant served in Korea from August 2001 to August 2002. She is
entitled to award of the KDSM.

BOARD DETERMINATION/RECOMMENDATION:
The Board determined that the evidence presented was sufficient to warrant
a recommendation for relief. As a result, the Board recommends that all
Department of the Army records of the individual concerned be corrected by
awarding her the KDSM.
