2. The applicant requests that his DD Form 214 (Report of Separation) be corrected to show award of the Purple Heart.
3. The applicant states that he was wounded in Korea in October 1951. He also states that he would like to have orders to support the battlefield commendation.
4. The applicant’s military records show that he was inducted into the Army on 10 January 1951, served in Korea during the Korean War with the 8th Cavalry Regiment. He was seriously wounded in action on 9 October 1951. He was retired in the rank of corporal on 31 January 1953 because of a permanent disability. His DD Form 214 shows award of the Combat Infantryman Badge, the Korean Service Medal with one bronze service star, and the United Nations Service Medal. It does not show award of the Purple Heart.
5. The applicant's qualification card shows that he qualified as a marksman with both the M1 rifle and the carbine.
6. A WD AGO Form 0707 (Record of Award of Purple Heart) shows that he was awarded the Purple Heart per TAH, 8059th AU 1052 General Order Number 341, dated 15 October 1951. In an 11 January 1952 letter order The Adjutant General awarded the applicant the Purple Heart.
7. On 12 October 1951 the applicant's commanding officer recommended that the applicant be awarded the Bronze Star Medal with "V" device for heroism in action. The recommendation was approved. On 7 November 1951, Headquarters,1st Cavalry Division published General Orders Number 345, awarding the applicant the Bronze Star Medal with "V" device.
8. The Unit Citation and Campaign Participation Credit Register shows that the 8th Cavalry Regiment was awarded the Bravery Gold Medal of Greece for its actions while the applicant was assigned to that organization.
9. The Army Good Conduct Medal is awarded to individuals who distinguish themselves by their conduct, efficiency and fidelity during a qualifying period of active duty enlisted service. This period is 3 years except in those cases when the period for the first award ends with the termination of a period of Federal military service.
10. The National Defense Service Medal is awarded for honorable active service for any period between 27 June 1950 and 27 July 1954.

As a matter of information, on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the Korean War, the Government of the Republic of Korea issued the Korean War Service Medal to pay tribute to eligible Korean War veterans for their historic endeavors to preserve the freedom of the Republic of Korea and the free world. On 20 August 1999, the Department of Defense approved acceptance and wear of this foreign award to eligible US veterans of the Korean War, or their surviving next of kin. The medal is provided at no cost to the veterans.
12. The Department of Defense has assigned responsibility to the Department of the Air Force for distribution of the Korean War Service Medal to eligible veterans or their surviving next of kin. To apply, veterans must provide a copy of their discharge paper (DD Form 214) to the Awards and Decorations Section, Headquarters, Air Force Personnel Center, 550 C Street West, Suite 12, Randolph Air Force Base, Texas 78150-4714. A sample request form is being provided to the applicant. Once the Korean War Service Medal has been authorized by the Department of the Air Force, the applicant may apply to the Army Board for Correction of Military Records to add this foreign award to his DD Form 214.
CONCLUSIONS:
1. The applicant was wounded in action and was awarded the Purple Heart. That award should be reflected on his DD Form 214.
2. The applicant was awarded the Bronze Star Medal with "V" device. That award should be shown on his DD Form 214.
3. The applicant is entitled to award of the Marksman Marksmanship Qualification Badge with rifle and carbine bars. He is entitled to award of the Bravery Gold Medal of Greece.
4. The applicant served his country honorably and faithfully. He is entitled to award of the Army Good Conduct Medal. He is also entitled to award of the National Defense Service Medal.
5. The applicant's request for orders to support his battlefield commendation should be honored. In this respect the applicant should be furnished the documents, to include the WD AGO Form 0707 and The Adjutant General letter order awarding him the Purple Heart; and all the correspondence recommending that he awarded the Bronze Star Medal with "V" device, and the 1st Cavalry Division General Orders effecting that award.
6. In view of the foregoing, the applicant’s records should be corrected as recommended below.
RECOMMENDATION:
That all of the Department of the Army records related to this case be corrected by:
a. awarding the applicant the Purple Heart, the Bronze Star Medal with "V" device, the Marksman Marksmanship Qualification Badge with rifle and carbine bars, the Bravery Gold Medal of Greece, the Army Good Conduct Medal, and the National Defense Service Medal; and
b. furnishing the applicant the documents mentioned in paragraph 5 above.
