2. The applicant requests correction of his military records to show award of the Air Medal.
3. The applicant states that he received the Air Medal in Vietnam on 17 August 1968. In support of his application, he submits an award certificate for the Air Medal.
4. The applicant’s military records show that he enlisted on 24 March 1961 for a period of 3 years. He served as a light weapons infantryman and was honorably released on 23 March 1964. He reenlisted on 12 May 1967 for a period of
3 years. The applicant served as a light weapons infantryman in Vietnam from 18 April 1968 through 10 April 1969 and was honorably discharged on 11 May 1970.
5. The applicant’s DD Form 214 (Report of Transfer or Discharge) with an effective date of 11 May 1970 does not show the Air Medal as an authorized award.
6. In support of his claim for award of the Air Medal, the applicant provided an award certificate, dated 17 August 1968, which shows he was awarded the Air Medal for the period April 1968 to August 1968.
7. The applicant’s service personnel records contain 1st Air Cavalry Division General Orders Number 10703, dated 17 August 1968, which show the applicant was awarded the Air Medal for meritorious achievement while participating in aerial flight in Vietnam during the period April 1968 to August 1968.
CONCLUSIONS:
1. The applicant’s DD Form 214 does not show the Air Medal as an authorized award.
2. Evidence of record shows the applicant received the Air Medal on 17 August 1968. Therefore, the applicant is entitled to correction of his DD Form 214 with an effective date of 11 May 1970 to show award of the Air Medal.
3. In view of the foregoing, the applicant’s records should be corrected as recommended below.
RECOMMENDATION:
That all of the Department of the Army records related to this case be corrected by showing that the individual concerned was awarded the Air Medal.
