2. The applicant requests his award for completion of Advanced Individual Training (AIT).
3. The applicant states that this award is not on his DD Form 214 (Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty).
4. The applicant’s military records show that he enlisted in the Army Reserve. He completed his Initial Active Duty for Training (IADT) and successfully completed the 10 week Light Wheel Vehicle Mechanic Course on 12 December 1985. His DD Form 214 for this period of service does not list the Army Service Ribbon as an authorized award. Additionally, block 14 (Military Education) does not list the course he completed.
5. Army Regulation 600-8-22 provides the policy for military awards. It provides that the Army Service Ribbon is awarded to members upon successful completion of their initial military occupational specialty producing course.
6. Army Regulation 635-5 provides the policy for completion of separation documents including the DD Form 214. It provides that block 14 will list formal in-service training courses successfully completed during the period of service covered by the DD Form 214. This information is to assist the soldier in job placement; therefore, training courses for combat skills will not be listed. The block will show the course title, length in weeks, and year completed.
CONCLUSIONS:
1. The applicant successfully completed his initial military occupational specialty producing course and is entitled to the Army Service Ribbon.
2. The applicant is also entitled to have his in-service training course listed on his DD Form 214.
3. In view of the foregoing, the applicant’s records should be corrected as recommended below.
RECOMMENDATION:
That all of the Department of the Army records related to this case for the individual concerned be corrected:
a. by showing that he was awarded the Army Service Ribbon; and
b. by adding to block 14 of his DD Form 214 "Light Wheel Vehicle Mechanic Course, 10 Weeks, 1985."
