2. The applicant requests that his records be corrected to reflect his correct Social Security Account Number (SSAN).
3. The applicant states, in effect, that the SSAN entered on his records belongs to another individual and his records should be corrected to reflect his correct SSAN. In support of his application he submits a letter from the Social Security Administration verifying his correct SSAN.
4. The applicant’s military records show that he enlisted in Rochester, New York on 23 February 1966, for a period of 3 years and training as a field wireman. At the time of his enlistment he was issued a Regular Army serial number. There is no indication in the available records to show that he had a SSAN at the time he enlisted. However, his records show that a subsequent entry was made on his Enlisted Qualification Record (DA Form 20) showing a SSAN.
5. The applicant remained on active duty until he was discharged under honorable conditions on 14 March 1968, under the provisions of Army Regulation 635-212 for unsuitability due to apathy. He had served 2 years and 14 days of total active service and had 8 days of lost time due to being absent without leave. His report of separation (DD Form 214) reflected a SSAN ending in 8674.
6. The supporting letter from the Social Security Administration indicates that the applicant’s SSAN ends in 7570 and was issued to the applicant in 1971.
CONCLUSIONS:
1. It appears that the applicant did not have a SSAN while he was in the service and the Department did not take the steps necessary to verify the validity of the SSAN contained on his records.
2. Therefore, the Board finds that it would be in the interest of justice to correct his SSAN to reflect that his correct SSAN is that number verified by the Social Security Administration ending in 7570.
3. In view of the foregoing, the applicant’s records should be corrected as recommended below.
RECOMMENDATION: That all of the Department of the Army records related to this case be corrected by showing that the correct SSAN of the individual concerned is that number provided by the Social Security Administration as ending in 7570.
