		IN THE CASE OF:

		BOARD DATE: 3 March 2015

		DOCKET NUMBER: AR20140011866

THE BOARD CONSIDERED THE FOLLOWING EVIDENCE:

1. Application for correction of military records (with supporting documents provided, if any).

2. Military Personnel Records and advisory opinions (if any).

THE APPLICANT'S REQUEST, STATEMENT, AND EVIDENCE:

1. The applicant requests the entry in item 2 (Department, Component and Branch) of his DD Form 214 (Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty) with a separation date of 26 March 2000 be corrected to show his component as Regular Army (RA).

2. The applicant states:

   a. he has never been assigned to an Army National Guard (ARNG) unit; and

   b. the identifier "ARNG" in Block 2 of his DD Form 214 has created difficulties when applying for Wisconsin State veterans benefits that require active duty service.

3. The applicant provides copies of his DD Form 214

CONSIDERATION OF EVIDENCE:

1. On 27 March 1996, the applicant enlisted in the Regular Army (RA) for a period of 4 years, and was awarded the military occupational specialty
63T(Bradley Fighting Vehicle System Mechanic). He had completed 4 years of active service that was characterized as honorable. On 26 March 2000, he was released from the RA and transferred to the U.S. Army Reserve (USAR). Item 2 of his DD Form 214 contains the entry "ARMY/ARNG."

2. Army Regulation 635-5 (Separation Documents) states the entry for item 2 of the DD Form 214 consists of the RA, ARNGUS (Army National Guard of the United States), or USAR.

DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSIONS:

1. The applicant contends item 2 on his DD Form 214 should be changed to show he was in the RA and not the ARNG.

2. There is no evidence the applicant was ever a member of the ARNG. His records show he enlisted in the RA on 27 March 1996.

3. Therefore, the entry in item 2 of the applicant's DD Form 214 with an effective date of separation of 26 March 2000 should read ARMY/RA.

BOARD VOTE:

___x_____ __x____ ___x____ GRANT FULL RELIEF

________ ________ ________ GRANT PARTIAL RELIEF

________ ________ ________ GRANT FORMAL HEARING

________ ________ ________ DENY APPLICATION

BOARD DETERMINATION/RECOMMENDATION:

The Board determined that the evidence presented was sufficient to warrant a recommendation for relief. As a result, the Board recommends that all Department of the Army records of the individual concerned be corrected by correcting item 2 of the applicant's DD Form 214 with a separation date of
26 March 2000 to read ARMY/RA.
