		IN THE CASE OF:

		BOARD DATE:	  15 May 2014

		DOCKET NUMBER:  AR20130016307

THE BOARD CONSIDERED THE FOLLOWING EVIDENCE:

1. Application for correction of military records (with supporting documents provided, if any).

2. Military Personnel Records and advisory opinions (if any).

THE APPLICANT'S REQUEST, STATEMENT, AND EVIDENCE:

1. The applicant requests correction of his DD Form 214 (Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty) to show the Iraq Campaign Medal.

2. The applicant states he was awarded the Iraq Campaign Medal but it is not shown on his DD Form 214.

3. The applicant provides his DD Form 214 and two memoranda.

CONSIDERATION OF EVIDENCE:

1. The applicant was an Army National Guard (ARNG) private (PV2) and on 24 May 2011, he entered active duty as a member of his ARNG unit in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF).

2. His records contain a memorandum, dated 30 January 2012, issued by the Commander, 1st Squadron, 94th Cavalry Regiment, wherein it stated the memorandum served as certification that the applicant served with the unit in Kuwait during 2012 and was awarded the Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal.

3. The applicant provides and his records contain a memorandum, dated 21 February 2012, issued by the Commander, 1st Squadron, 94th Cavalry Regiment, wherein it stated the memorandum served as certification that the applicant served with the unit for 63 nonconsecutive days in Iraq and was authorized the Iraq Campaign Medal for his service in Iraq from:
* 8 - 14 August 2011, 7 days
* 19 - 29 August 2011, 11 days
* 5 - 20 September 2011, 16 days
* 17 - 22 October 2011, 6 days
* 26 - 30 October 2011, 5 days
* 3 - 8 November 2011, 6 days
* 15 - 19 November 2011, 5 days
* 30 November - 2 December 2011, 3 days
* 2 - 5 December 2011, 4 days

4. He was honorably released from active duty on 5 May 2012.

5. The DD Form 214 he was issued for this period of service does not show the Iraq Campaign Medal. This DD Form 214 shows during this period of service he served in Kuwait/Iraq from 24 July 2011 to 11 April 2012.

6. Army Regulation 600-8-22 (Military Awards) states the Iraq Campaign Medal is awarded to service members who served in direct support of OIF. The Iraq Campaign Medal period of eligibility is on or after 19 March 2003 to 31 December 2011. Service members must have been assigned, attached, or mobilized to units operating in the area of eligibility for 30 consecutive days or for 60 non-consecutive days. A bronze service star is authorized for wear with this medal for participation in each credited campaign. A review of his record shows he participated in one campaign during his service in Iraq.

DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSIONS:

The evidence of record confirms the applicant served in Iraq during a qualifying period for award of the Iraq Campaign Medal and he participated in one campaign during his service in Iraq. Therefore, he is entitled to correction of his DD Form 214 to show the Iraq Campaign Medal with one bronze service star.
