THE APPLICANT'S REQUEST, STATEMENT, AND EVIDENCE:
1. The applicant requests correction of his DD Form 214 (Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty) to show 4 months of service not currently accounted for on his DD Form 214.
2. The applicant states he was hospitalized for frostbite at Brooke Army Medical Center (BAMC), San Antonio, TX, for a 4-month period. He contends this period is not reflected on his DD Form 214.
3. The applicant provides no additional evidence in support of his request.
CONSIDERATION OF EVIDENCE:
1. The applicant enlisted in the Regular Army on 1 April 2009. He completed one-station unit training (OSUT) at Fort Benning, GA, and was awarded military occupational specialty 11B (Infantryman).
2. Upon completion of OSUT and the basic airborne course, he was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 187th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), Fort Campbell, KY.
3. His records show he was reported as absent without leave (AWOL) by his unit on the following occasions:
* from on or about 6 January 2010 through on or about 28 July 2010
* from on or about 9 September 2010 through on or about 27 September 2010
* from 6 February 2011 through on or about 14 February 2011
4. On 13 May 2011, the applicant was discharged under honorable conditions (general) under the provisions of Army Regulation 635-200 (Active Duty Enlisted Administrative Separations), chapter 14. His DD Form 214 shows:
a. He was discharged for misconduct (AWOL).
b. He was credited with completion of 1 year, 5 months, and 22 days of net active service during this period of enlistment.
c. He accrued a total of 7 months and 21 days of lost time during the following periods:
* 6 January 2010-28 July 2010, a period of 6 months and 23 days
* 9-27 September 2010, a period of 19 days
* 6-14 February 2011, a period of 9 days
5. His record is void of any documentation that shows he was hospitalized at BAMC for frostbite during any period while he served on active duty. His medical records are not available for review.
6. Army Regulation 635-5 (Separation Documents) establishes the standardized policy for preparing and distributing the DD Form 214. The DD Form 214 is a summary of a Soldier's most recent period of continuous active duty and provides the individual with documentary evidence of his or her military service. It is important that information entered on the form should be complete and accurate.
a. Item 12a documents the beginning date of the continuous period of active duty for issuance of this DD Form 214.
b. Item 12b documents the Soldier's transition date, less lost time.
c. Item 12c documents the amount of active service during this period computed by subtracting item 12a from item 12b, less lost time.
d. Item 29 documents time lost under Title 10, U.S. Code (USC), section 972.
The dates of time lost during the current enlistment are entered on the DD Form 214. For enlisted personnel, the inclusive periods of lost time to be made good under Title 10, USC, section 972, and periods of non-inclusive time after expiration of term of service are entered. Time lost under Title 10, USC, section 972, is not creditable service for pay, retirement, or veterans' benefits. However, the Army preserves a record of it even after it has been made up to explain which service between the date of entry on active duty and the date of separation is creditable service.
DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSIONS:
1. The applicant contends he was hospitalized for frostbite at BAMC for a
4-month period. The evidence of record does not support this contention.
2. The evidence of record shows his active service, both creditable and non-creditable, is accurately represented on his DD Form 214. He had 7 months and 21 days of lost time. When subtracted from the total period of service from his date of enlistment through his date of discharge, the resulting period equals the documented net active service shown on his DD Form 214.
3. In view of the foregoing, there is no basis to grant the requested relief.
