		BOARD DATE:	  6 June 2013

		DOCKET NUMBER:  AR20120019761

THE BOARD CONSIDERED THE FOLLOWING EVIDENCE:

2. Military Personnel Records and advisory opinions (if any).

THE APPLICANT'S REQUEST, STATEMENT, AND EVIDENCE:

1. The applicant requests his records be corrected to show his authorized awards include the Army Achievement Medal and Korea Defense Service Medal.

2. The applicant states he is not sure why the Army Achievement Medal was left off his DD Form 214 (Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty). The Korea Defense Service Medal was created after he was released from active duty.

3. The applicant provides copies of his DD Form 214, an Army Achievement Medal recommendation and award certificate, and an informational printout about the Korea Defense Service Medal.

CONSIDERATION OF EVIDENCE:

1. The applicant served on active duty in the Regular Army from 7 May 1995 through 21 August 1997.

2. The Army Achievement Medal recommendation and certificate show the applicant was awarded this medal on 20 April 1996 in Permanent Orders Number 108-3 for meritorious service from 31 March 1995 to 14 April 1996.

3. A review of the applicant's records show he served in Korea with Battery D, 5th Battalion, 5th Air Defense Artillery Regiment from 13 September 1995 through 10 September 1996.
4. The applicant was honorably discharged on 21 August 1997. He had completed 2 years, 5 months, and 17 days of active duty service with 7 days of lost time. His awards are shown as:

* Army Lapel Button
* National Defense Service Medal

* Marksman Marksmanship Qualification Badge with M-16 Rifle and Pistol Bars

Army Regulation 600-8-22 (Military Awards) states the Korea Defense Service Medal is authorized for award to members of the Armed Forces of the United States who have served on active duty in support of the defense of the Republic of Korea. The period of eligibility is 28 July 1954 to a date to be determined by the Secretary of Defense.

DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSIONS:

1. The applicant's award of the Army Achievement Medal was omitted from his DD Form 214. It is appropriate correct this error.

2. The applicant served during the period for which the Korea Defense Service Medal is authorized. This award was not created until after his release from active duty; hence, it is not currently shown on his DD Form 214.

3. Based on the above facts and findings, it is appropriate to correct the applicant's records to show that in addition to the awards shown on his DD Form 214 he is authorized the Army Achievement Medal and the Korea Defense Service Medal.
