		IN THE CASE OF:

		BOARD DATE: 18 October 2011

		DOCKET NUMBER: AR20110006854

THE BOARD CONSIDERED THE FOLLOWING EVIDENCE:

1. Application for correction of military records (with supporting documents provided, if any).

2. Military Personnel Records and advisory opinions (if any).

THE APPLICANT'S REQUEST, STATEMENT, AND EVIDENCE:

1. The applicant requests correction of his deployment dates in Afghanistan shown in item 18 (Remarks) of his DD Form 214 (Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty).

2. The applicant states:

* His Afghanistan dates of deployment are stated incorrectly on his
DD Form 214
* The dates of his deployment should be November 2008 to November 2009
* He and five Soldiers deployed ahead of the brigade in November 2008 and returned in November 2009
* The rest of the brigade deployed in January 2009

3. The applicant provides:

* Orders for the Joint Service Commendation Medal
* Award certificate for the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) Medal

CONSIDERATION OF EVIDENCE:

1. The applicant enlisted in the Regular Army on 27 October 2005. He served as a multichannel transmissions operator and maintainer. On 12 March 2010, he was honorably released from active duty and transferred to the U.S. Army Reserve Control Group (Reinforcement) to complete his remaining service obligation.

2. Item 18 of his DD Form 214 shows the entry "SERVICE IN AFGHANISTAN 20081120-20090211."

3. He provided permanent orders, dated 27 July 2009, which show he received the Joint Service Commendation Medal for meritorious service during the period 22 November 2008 to 4 November 2009 in Afghanistan.

4. He also provided an award certificate which shows he received the NATO Medal for service with NATO on operations in relation to the ISAF [International Security Assistance Force] Operation during the period 20 November 2008 to
19 November 2009.

5. The Defense Finance and Accounting Service (DFAS) confirmed the applicant received hostile fire/imminent danger pay and combat zone tax exclusion from
22 November 2008 through 3 November 2009 for service in Afghanistan.

DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSIONS:

His DD Form 214 shows he served in Afghanistan from 20 November 2008 to
11 February 2009. However, DFAS confirms he served in Afghanistan from
22 November 2008 to 3 November 2009. Therefore, this information is accepted as sufficient evidence with which to correct item 18 of his DD Form 214 to show his deployed service in Afghanistan as 22 November 2008 to 3 November 2009.
