		IN THE CASE OF:

		BOARD DATE: 2 September 2010

		DOCKET NUMBER: AR20100009614

THE BOARD CONSIDERED THE FOLLOWING EVIDENCE:

1. Application for correction of military records (with supporting documents provided, if any).

2. Military Personnel Records and advisory opinions (if any).

THE APPLICANT'S REQUEST, STATEMENT, AND EVIDENCE:

1. The applicant requests correction of item 11 (Primary Specialty) of his DD Form 214 (Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty) to show he served in military occupational specialty (MOS) 11B (Infantryman) for a period of 1 year and 22 days or as calculated by the Army.

2. The applicant states he held MOS 11B during his mobilization and served in this MOS, but his DD Form 214 does not show he did so.

3. The applicant provides a copy of his DD Form 214.

CONSIDERATION OF EVIDENCE:

1. The applicant's records show he enlisted in the Ohio Army National Guard on 27 March 2007. He subsequently entered active duty for training on 26 April 2007 and completed basic combat and advanced individual training under the one-station unit training for MOS 11B.

2. On 25 June 2007, Headquarters, U.S. Army Infantry Center, Fort Benning, GA, published Orders 176-2939, awarding him primary MOS 11B.

3. He was released from the Ohio Army National Guard on 9 April 2008 and he was transferred to the U.S. Army Reserve Control Group (Reinforcement) for completion of his remaining service obligation.

4. On 11 January 2009, he was ordered to active duty in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom and subsequently served in Iraq from 16 April 2009 to 24 January 2010. He was assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 1st Battalion, 120th Combined Arms Battalion.

5. He was honorably released from active duty on 2 February 2010 to the control of the U.S. Army Reserve. His DD Form 214 shows he completed 1 year and 22 days of creditable active service. Item 11 of his DD Form 214 shows the entry "11B1O Infantryman - 00 years 00 months//Nothing Follows."

6. Army Regulation 635-5 (Separation Documents) establishes the standardized policy for preparing and distributing the DD Form 214. The purpose of the separation document is to provide the individual with documentary evidence of his or her military service. It is important that information entered on the form should be complete and accurate. Item 11 of the DD Form 214 reflects the primary specialty. This item contains titles of all MOS's served for at least 1 year and includes the number of years and months served for each MOS. For the time determination, 16 days or more count as 1 month. Do not count basic training and advanced individual training.

DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSIONS:

The evidence of record shows the applicant was awarded MOS 11B subsequent to attending training at Fort Benning, GA. He held this MOS throughout his entire mobilization period of 1 year and 22 days. It appears his DD Form 214 inadvertently omitted the number of years and months he served in this MOS. Therefore, he is entitled to correction of his DD Form 214 to show he served in MOS 11B for 1 year and 1 month (22 days count as 1 month).

BOARD VOTE:
