2. The applicant requests correction of his DD Form 214 (Report of Transfer or Discharge) to show award of the Distinguished Marksman Badge (correctly known as the Distinguished Rifleman Badge).
3. The applicant states that item 26 (Decorations, Medals, Badges, Commendations, Citations and Campaign Ribbons Awarded or Authorized) on his DD Form 214 does not show this badge. In support of his application, he submits a copy of his DD Form 214, orders for award of the Distinguished Marksman Badge, dated 5 October 1956, and orders for award of four badges for Excellence-in-Competition.
4. The applicant’s military records show that he enlisted in the Army National Guard on 20 January 1954. He was ordered to active duty on 19 January 1955 for a period of 2 years. He served as a mechanic and was released from active duty on 18 January 1957.
5. The applicant's DD Form 214 does not show the Distinguished Rifleman Badge as an authorized award.
6. An Office of The Adjutant General letter, dated 5 October 1956, shows the applicant was awarded the Distinguished Marksman Badge.
7. Section 9 (Medals, Decorations, and Citations) on the applicant's DA Form 24 (Service Record) shows entitlement to the Distinguished Marksman Badge.
8. Army Regulation 672-5-1 (Military Awards), in effect at the time, provides that a Distinguished Rifleman Badge or a Distinguished Pistol Shot Badge is awarded to a member of the Army or to a civilian in recognition of a preeminent degree of achievement in target practice firing with the military service rifle or pistol. Winners of Distinguished designation badges will not part with them without authority of the Secretary of the Army and will hold them subject to inspection at any time.
CONCLUSIONS:
1. The applicant received the Distinguished Marksman Badge on 5 October 1956. Therefore, the applicant is entitled to correction of his DD Form 214 to show award of the Distinguished Rifleman Badge.
2. In view of the foregoing, the applicant’s records should be corrected as recommended below.
RECOMMENDATION:
That all of the Department of the Army records related to this case be corrected by showing that the individual concerned be awarded the Distinguished Rifleman Badge.
