2. The applicant requests correction of her DD Form 214 (Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty) to show award of the Army Superior Unit Award.
3. The applicant states that the Army Superior Unit Award was not added to item 13 (Decorations, Medals, Badges, Commendations, Citations and Campaign Ribbons Awarded or Authorized) on her discharge document. In support of her application, she submits a copy of her DD Form 214 and a memorandum announcing award of the Army Superior Unit Award for the period 1 October 1999 to 1 October 2000.
4. The applicant’s military records show that she enlisted in the Regular Army on 14 September 1999. She successfully completed training as a wire systems installer and was assigned to the 306th Military Intelligence Battalion in Fort Huachuca, Arizona. The applicant was honorably released from active duty on 13 October 2001 in the rank of private first class.
5. The applicant's DD Form 214 does not show the Army Superior Unit Award as an authorized award.
6. The applicant provided a memorandum, dated 16 January 2001, which announced approval of the Army Superior Unit Award for the period 1 October 1999 to 1 October 2000. The attached listing of staff agencies and supporting organizations to this memorandum shows that, at the time of the applicant’s assignment to the 306th Military Intelligence Battalion, the unit was cited for award of the Army Superior Unit Award based on Department of the Army General Orders Number 29, dated 31 December 2001.
7. Army Regulation 600-8-22 (Military Awards) provides, in pertinent part, that the Army Superior Unit Award was created in 1985 to recognize outstanding meritorious performance by a unit in completing a difficult and challenging mission under extraordinary circumstances during peacetime. Circumstances may be deemed to be extraordinary when they do not represent the typical day-to-day circumstances under which the unit normally performs, or may reasonably be expected to perform, its peacetime mission.
CONCLUSIONS:
1. While the applicant was assigned to the 306th Military Intelligence Battalion, the unit was cited for award of the Army Superior Unit Award. Therefore, she is entitled to correction of her DD Form 214 to show award of the Army Superior Unit Award.
2. In view of the foregoing, the applicant’s records should be corrected as recommended below.
RECOMMENDATION:
That all of the Department of the Army records related to this case be corrected by showing the individual concerned was awarded the Army Superior Unit Award.
