PROCEEDINGS

         IN THE CASE OF:

         BOARD DATE: 28 AUGUST 2001
         DOCKET NUMBER: AR2001057962

I certify that hereinafter is recorded the true and complete record of the proceedings of the Army Board for Correction of Military Records in the case of the above-named individual.

Mr. Carl W. S. Chun Director
Mr. Kenneth H. Aucock Analyst

The following members, a quorum, were present:

Mr. John N. Slone Chairperson
Mr. Richard T. Dunbar Member
Mr. Donald P. Hupman, Jr. Member

The applicant and counsel if any, did not appear before the Board.

The Board considered the following evidence:

Exhibit A - Application for correction of military
records
Exhibit B - Military Personnel Records (including
         advisory opinion, if any)

FINDINGS :

1. The applicant has exhausted or the Board has waived the requirement for exhaustion of all administrative remedies afforded by existing law or regulations.

2. The applicant requests that his record be corrected to show that he was awarded the Bravery Gold Medal of Greece for service in Korea while with the 8th Cavalry Regiment of the 1st Cavalry Division.

3. The applicant made no statement but referred to an awards letter for that medal. That letter is not included with his application. However, he submits a copy of this Board’s 13 March 2001 decision which awarded that medal to another former soldier assigned to the same unit as the applicant.

4. The applicant’s military records show that he served on active duty from 17 January 1947 and was separated with an honorable discharge on 7 July 1948. He was awarded the Army of Occupation Medal for his service in Germany.

5. The applicant’s DD Form 214 of 5 December 1951 shows that he entered on active duty on 29 September 1950 and served for 1 year, 2 months, and 7 days, of which 10 months and 25 days were overseas. He was awarded the Combat Infantryman Badge and the Korean Service Medal with three bronze service stars. His most significant duty assignment was with Company C, 8th Cavalry Regiment of the 1st Cavalry Division.

6. A copy of General Order Number 2, dated in February 1956 , shows that the Bravery Gold Medal of Greece was awarded by Paul, The King of Greece in accordance with Royal Order dated 15 June 1955, to the 1st Cavalry Division and its assigned units, to include the 8th Cavalry Regiment. The award was confirmed by Department of the Army.

7. Army Regulation 600-8-22, paragraph 9-9 provides for the award of foreign unit decorations and states in effect that acceptance of foreign unit decorations will be reported for confirmation in DA General Orders. Confirmed foreign unit decorations are listed in DA Pamphlet 672-1 and DA Pamphlet 672-3.
DA Pamphlet 672-1 shows that the 8th Cavalry Regiment was awarded the Bravery Gold Medal of Greece for its actions during the Korean War.

8. That regulation also states that personnel awarded the Korean Service Medal automatically establish eligibility for the United Nations Service Medal.

CONCLUSIONS:

1. The applicant is entitled to award of the Bravery Gold Medal of Greece and the United Nations Service Medal.

2. In view of the foregoing, the applicant’s records should be corrected as recommended below.

RECOMMENDATION:

That all of the Department of the Army records related to this case be corrected by showing that the individual concerned was awarded the Bravery Gold Medal for Greece for his actions with the 8th Cavalry Regiment during the Korean War, and that he was also awarded the United Nations Service Medal.
