AIR FORCE BOARD FOR CORRECTION OF MILITARY RECORDS
IN THE MATTER OF: DOCKET NUMBER: 02-01142
INDEX CODE: 110.00
COUNSEL: NONE
HEARING DESIRED: NO
_________________________________________________________________
APPLICANT REQUESTS THAT:
In the applicant’s request for reconsideration, he requests that his
discharge documents be corrected to reflect that he was assigned to the ---
th Fighter Squadron, ---th Fighter Group.
_________________________________________________________________
STATEMENT OF FACTS:
Applicant enlisted in the Army Air Corps on 21 Oct 42. He was assigned to
the ---th Fighter Squadron, ---th Fighter Group. He was transferred to the
---h AAA AW Battalion after completion of his active duty tour in Germany
as part of the Occupation Air Force. On 20 Nov 45, he was separated for
the convenience of the government and transferred to the Reserves. On 10
Oct 48, he was discharged from the Air Force Reserves.
A similar appeal was considered and denied by the Board on 19 Jul 02. For
an accounting of the facts and circumstances surrounding the earlier
decision by the Board, see the Record of Proceedings at Exhibit F.
On 3 Aug 02, the applicant submitted a request for reconsideration. In
support of his request, applicant provided a personal statement, copies of
awards earned, photographs, a list of personnel, and a letter from the ---
th Association. His complete submission, with attachments, is at Exhibit
G.
_________________________________________________________________
THE BOARD CONCLUDES THAT:
Sufficient relevant evidence has been presented to demonstrate the
existence of an injustice that would warrant corrective action. Evidence
provided by the applicant has led us to consider it reasonable to favorably
consider his request. It appears that the applicant served his tour on
active duty in Europe as a member of the ---th Fighter Squadron, ---th
Fighter Group. He was then transferred to the continental United States
and assigned to the ---th AA Battalion for the purpose of separation
processing. While his discharge documents are administratively correct, it
is our opinion that it would be an injustice for his records to continue to
reflect that he was assigned to the ---th AA Battalion after having served
his country honorably and faithfully as a member of the ---th Fighter
Squadron, ---- Fighter Group. Accordingly, it is our opinion that his
records should be corrected to the extent indicated below.
_________________________________________________________________
THE BOARD RECOMMENDS THAT:
The pertinent military records of the Department of the Air Force relating
to APPLICANT be corrected to show that at the time of his separation from
active duty on 20 November 1945, his organization of assignment was the ---
th Fighter Squadron, ---th Fighter Group.
