THE BOARD CONSIDERED THE FOLLOWING EVIDENCE:

1.  Application for correction of military records (with supporting documents provided, if any).

2.  Military Personnel Records and advisory opinions (if any).


THE APPLICANT'S REQUEST, STATEMENT, AND EVIDENCE:

1.  The applicant requests correction of his DD Form 214 (Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty) to show the Meritorious Unit Commendation. 

2.  The applicant states his DD Form 214 does not list the Meritorious Unit Commendation.  He served in Iraq with the 1st Battalion, 24th Infantry during the 2008/2009 timeframe.  This unit was awarded this unit award.  

3.  The applicant provides his DD Form 214, a unit's Lineage and Honors printout, and frequently asked questions from the HRC website. 

CONSIDERATION OF EVIDENCE:

1.  The applicant's records show he enlisted in the Regular Army on 4 January 2007 and reenlisted (in Iraq) on 1 November 2008.  He was trained in and held military occupational specialty 92Y (Unit Supply Specialist). 

2.  He served in Iraq from 20 September 2008 to 13 September 2009.  He was assigned to C Company, 1st Battalion, 24th Infantry Regiment, out of Fort Wainwright, Alaska. 

3.  Permanent Orders (PO) Number 361-001, issued by Headquarters, 1st Battalion, 24th Infantry on 26 December 2012, awarded him the Army Good Conduct Medal (2nd Award). 

4.  His Enlisted Record Brief (ERB) lists, in addition to those awards listed on his DD Form 214, the following awards: 

* Meritorious Unit Commendation
* Army Commendation Medal 
* Army Achievement Medal (3)
* Driver/Mechanic Badge with Driver-?W? Clasp 

5.  He retired by reason of disability on 30 October 2014 and he was placed on the retired list in his retired rank/grade of specialist/E-4 on 1 November 2014.  His DD Form 214 shows he completed 7 years, 9 months, and 27 days of net active service this period.  He was awarded or authorized the: 

* Iraq Campaign Medal with 2 bronze service stars 
* Army Good Conduct Medal
* National Defense Service Medal
* Global War on Terrorism Service Medal
* Army Service Ribbon
* Overseas Service Ribbon3rd Award

6.  General Orders (GO) Number 2013-63, issued by Headquarters, Department of the Army, on 30 September 2013, awarded multiple units, including Companies A, B, and C, and Headquarters and Headquarters Company, of the 1st Battalion, 24th Infantry Regiment, the Meritorious Unit Commendation for exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding service during the period 28 October 2008 to 12 September 2009.

DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSIONS:

1.  GO awarded the applicant's unit in Iraq the Meritorious Unit Commendation which is not shown on his DD Form 214.  

2.  PO awarded the applicant two awards of the Army Good Conduct Medal.  His DD Form 214 only listed one award.   

3.  The applicant's ERB shows the below awards were awarded or authorized.  For unknown reasons, none of these awards are listed on his DD Form 214.  

* Army Commendation Medal 
* Army Achievement Medal (3)
* Driver/Mechanic Badge with Driver-?W? Clasp

BOARD DETERMINATION/RECOMMENDATION:

The Board determined that the evidence presented was sufficient to warrant a recommendation for relief.  As a result, the Board recommends that all Department of the Army records of the individual concerned be corrected by deleting from his DD Form 214 the Army Good Conduct Medal and adding the: 

* Meritorious Unit Commendation
* Army Good Conduct Medal (2nd Award)
* Army Commendation Medal 
* Army Achievement Medal (3)
* Driver/Mechanic Badge with Driver-?W? Clasp
