		IN THE CASE OF:

		BOARD DATE: 25 June 2015

		DOCKET NUMBER: AR20140019619

THE BOARD CONSIDERED THE FOLLOWING EVIDENCE:

1. Application for correction of military records (with supporting documents provided, if any).

2. Military Personnel Records and advisory opinions (if any).

THE APPLICANT'S REQUEST, STATEMENT, AND EVIDENCE:

1. The applicant requests the spelling of his last name be changed from "Bohne" to "Bahn" on his DD Form 214 (Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty) for the period ending on 26 October 2013.

2. He states he is still in the military and needs an accurate DD Form 214 to avoid confusion in upcoming boards.

3. He provides his DD Form 214 and a legal name change document.

CONSIDERATION OF EVIDENCE:

1. After having prior service in the Army National Guard, on 1 July 2010, the applicant enlisted in the U.S. Army Reserve (USAR). He is currently serving in the USAR in the rank of specialist four (SPC)/E-4.

2. Item 1 (Last Name, First Name, Middle Name) of his DD Form 214 for the period ending on 26 October 2013 shows the spelling of his last name as "Bohne."

3. The applicant provided a copy of his legal name change document that verifies the spelling of his last name was legally changed from "Bohne" to "Bahn" on 28 October 2014.

4. Army Regulation 635-5 (Separation Documents), in effect at the time, states that the DD Form 214 is a summary of a Soldier's most recent period of continuous active service. It provides a brief, clear-cut record of active duty service at the time of release from active duty, retirement, or discharge.

DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSIONS:

1. The available evidence shows that at the time the applicant was issued his
DD Form 214 for the period ending on 26 October 2013, his name was spelled as "Bohne." The change in the spelling of his last name did not occur until
28 October 2014, after the issuance of his DD Form 214. Therefore, the spelling of his last name contained on his 26 October 2013 DD Form 214 is correct as constituted.

2. For historical purposes, the Army has an interest in maintaining the integrity of its records. The data and information contained in those records should reflect the conditions and circumstances that existed at the time the records were created. While it is understandable that the applicant desires to have the spelling of his last name changed in his military records, there is not a sufficiently compelling reason for compromising the integrity of the Army’s records at this late date.

3. The applicant is advised that a copy of this decision document will be filed in his official military personnel file. This should serve to clarify any questions or confusion in regard to the spelling of the last name recorded in his military records.

BOARD VOTE:

BOARD DETERMINATION/RECOMMENDATION:

are insufficient as a basis for correction of the records of the individual concerned.
