THE BOARD CONSIDERED THE FOLLOWING EVIDENCE:

1.  Application for correction of military records (with supporting documents provided, if any).

2.  Military Personnel Records and advisory opinions (if any).


THE APPLICANT'S REQUEST, STATEMENT, AND EVIDENCE:

1.  The applicant requests award of the Valorous Unit Award be added to his DD Form 214 (Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty).

2.  He states he just received the award letter and would like his DD Form 214 to reflect that he has received the award.

3.  He provides Permanent Order 141-17, dated 21 May 2013.

CONSIDERATION OF EVIDENCE:

1.  The applicant enlisted in the Regular Army on 18 September 2008.

2.  His DD Form 214 shows he served in Afghanistan from 25 January 2010 to 28 January 2011 and lists his last duty assignment and major command as Headquarters and Headquarters Troop, 1st Squadron, 33rd Cavalry Regiment.

3.  His Enlisted Record Brief shows he was assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Troop, 1st Squadron, 33rd Cavalry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division during his deployment.  

4.  He provided Department of the Army, U.S. Army Human Resources Command, Fort Knox, KY Permanent Order 141-17, dated 21 May 2013, which awarded several units the Valorous Unit Award for heroism in action against armed enemy during the period 1 April to 31 August 2010 while conducting combat operations in support of Operation Enduring Freedom in the Ghazni, Paktya, Paktika, and Khowst Provinces in Eastern Afghanistan.  The 1st Squadron, 33rd Cavalry Regiment was listed among the units.  

5.  He was released from active duty on 28 January 2012.  His DD Form 214 does not show the Valorous Unit Award.  

DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSIONS:

1.  Permanent orders show the applicant's unit, Headquarters and Headquarters Troop, 1st Squadron, 33rd Cavalry Regiment was awarded the Valorous Unit Award for the period 1 April to 31 August 2010.  

2.  Since the applicant was assigned to the above unit during the period the Valorous Unit Award was awarded to the unit it would be appropriate to add the award to his DD Form 214.

BOARD DETERMINATION/RECOMMENDATION:

The Board determined that the evidence presented was sufficient to warrant a recommendation for relief.  As a result, the Board recommends that all Department of the Army records of the individual concerned be corrected by amending his DD Form 214 to add the Valorous Unit Award.
