IN THE CASE OF:
BOARD DATE: 3 December 2013
DOCKET NUMBER: AR20130006088
THE BOARD CONSIDERED THE FOLLOWING EVIDENCE:
1. Application for correction of military records (with supporting documents provided, if any).
2. Military Personnel Records and advisory opinions (if any).
THE APPLICANT'S REQUEST, STATEMENT, AND EVIDENCE:
1. The applicant requests correction of the record of her deceased husband, a former service member (FSM), to show he graduated from Jump School.
2. The applicant states:
* the FSM received a Parachutist Badge and he was in an airborne unit
* she is unable to place his airborne status on his grave marker until it is noted on his DD Form 214 (Armed Forces of the United States Report of Transfer or Discharge) for the period ending 12 March 1958
3. The applicant provides:
* photograph
* two DD Forms 214
* marriage certificate
* death certificate
CONSIDERATION OF EVIDENCE:
1. The FSM enlisted in the Regular Army on 29 March 1955.
2. Item 27 (Specialized Training) of his DA Form 20 (Enlisted Qualification Record) shows, "Basic Airborne, 3 weeks, 30 July 1955."
3. A DA Form 1307 (Individual Jump Record) shows the FSM's first jump occurred at Fort Campbell, KY, and that he completed 13 jumps.
4. On 12 March 1958, the FSM was honorably released from active duty. His DD Form 214 shows award of the Army Good Conduct Medal and Parachutist Badge.
5. The applicant was called to active duty on 27 October 1961 and he was released from active duty on 17 February 1962. His DD Form 214 for this period of service does not show any awards, badges, or training.
6. Army Regulation 635-5 (Separation Documents) prescribes the separation documents prepared for Soldiers upon retirement, discharge, or release from active military service or control of the Army. The regulation, in effect at the time, states to enter in item 28 the service schools, including dates and major courses which were successfully completed. This entry also includes military-sponsored courses completed in civilian schools and colleges during the period covered by the DD Form 214 being prepared.
DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSIONS:
The evidence shows the FSM completed the Basic Airborne course in 1955; therefore, his DD Form 214 for the period ending 12 March 1958 should be corrected to show this training.
