THE BOARD CONSIDERED THE FOLLOWING EVIDENCE:

1.  Application for correction of military records (with supporting documents provided, if any).

2.  Military Personnel Records and advisory opinions (if any).


THE APPLICANT'S REQUEST, STATEMENT, AND EVIDENCE:

1.  The applicant requests correction of his DD Form 214 (Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty) to show the Defense Meritorious Service Medal (DMSM).

2.  The applicant states he was awarded the DMSM but he received it after his discharge.

3.  The applicant provides a certificate and citation showing award of the DMSM.

CONSIDERATION OF EVIDENCE:

1.  The applicant was appointed as a Regular Army commissioned officer and he executed an oath of office on 27 May 2000.  He served in a variety of stateside or overseas assignments and he attained the rank of major.

2.  He was honorably discharged on 5 July 2011.  His DD Form 214 does not show the DMSM.

3.  Department of Defense Special Order U-206-02/HCH-2A2, dated 25 July 2011, awarded him the DMSM for meritorious service for the Armed Forces of the United States for the period 21 May 2007 - 15 May 2011.

4.  He provides a certificate, dated 15 July 2011, and an accompanying citation, that shows he was awarded the DMSM for meritorious service for the Armed Forces of the United States from May 2007 to May 2011.  The certificate is authenticated by a U.S. Navy official of the Defense Intelligence Agency.

DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSIONS:

Department of Defense special orders awarded the applicant the DMSM for meritorious service for the Armed Forces of the United States during the period 21 May 2007 - 15 May 2011.  Therefore, his DD Form 214 should be corrected to show this award.

BOARD DETERMINATION/RECOMMENDATION:

The Board determined that the evidence presented was sufficient to warrant a recommendation for relief.  As a result, the Board recommends that all Department of the Army records of the individual concerned be corrected by adding to his DD Form 214 the Defense Meritorious Service Medal.
