		IN THE CASE OF:

		BOARD DATE: 23 March 2010

		DOCKET NUMBER: AR20090014775

THE BOARD CONSIDERED THE FOLLOWING EVIDENCE:

1. Application for correction of military records (with supporting documents provided, if any).

2. Military Personnel Records and advisory opinions (if any).

THE APPLICANT'S REQUEST, STATEMENT, AND EVIDENCE:

1. The applicant requests that his 2007 DD Form 214 (Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty) be corrected to show entitlement to the Meritorious Unit Commendation.

2. The applicant states the unit award was awarded after his DD Form 214 was completed.

3. The applicant provides a copy of his 2007 DD Form 214 and documents confirming award of the Meritorious Unit Commendation to the 1744th Transportation Company.

CONSIDERATION OF EVIDENCE:

1. The records available to the Board indicate the applicant was a member of the Illinois Army National Guard when he was ordered to active duty on 23 June 2006 in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. He served in the theater of operations with the 1744th Transportation Company between September 2006 and September 2007.

2. On 17 October 2007 the applicant was released from active duty and returned to his home station in Illinois. His DD Form 214 reflects entitlement to the Iraq Campaign Medal but not the Meritorious Unit Commendation.

3. Permanent Orders 204-05, U.S. Army Human Resources Command, dated 22 July 2008, awarded the Meritorious Unit Commendation to the 1744th Transportation Company for exceptionally meritorious service during the period 12 August 2006 to 23 July 2007 as part of the 1034th Support Battalion.

4. Military Personnel Message Number 10-078 authorized campaign stars to be affixed to the Iraq Campaign Medal to denote participation in the designated campaign periods. During the applicant's service in Iraq he participated in two designated campaign periods:

* National Resolution commencing on 16 December 2005
* Iraqi Surge commencing on 10 January 2007

DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSIONS:

1. The evidence confirms the applicant was a member of the 1744th Transportation Company during the period it was awarded the Meritorious Unit Commendation. As such, it would be appropriate to correct the applicant's 2007 DD Form 214 accordingly.

2. The evidence also confirms the applicant is entitled to two bronze service stars for wear on his already-awarded Iraq Campaign Medal denoting his participation in two designated campaign periods while deployed to Iraq.

BOARD VOTE:

BOARD DETERMINATION/RECOMMENDATION:

The Board determined that the evidence presented was sufficient to warrant a recommendation for relief. As a result, the Board recommends that all Department of the Army records of the individual concerned be corrected by adding the Meritorious Unit Commendation and two bronze service stars to be affixed to his already-awarded Iraq Campaign Medal to his DD Form 214.
