THE BOARD CONSIDERED THE FOLLOWING EVIDENCE:

1. Application for correction of military records (with supporting documents provided, if any).

2. Military Personnel Records and advisory opinions (if any).

THE APPLICANT'S REQUEST, STATEMENT, AND EVIDENCE:

1. The applicant requests correction of his DD Form 214 (Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty) to show award of the Valorous Unit Award.

2. The applicant states that he retired on 31 January 2008 and later received orders for the Valorous Unit Award. He contends that the award was given to his unit for service during his deployment in Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.

3. The applicant provides a copy of his DD Form 214 and orders for the Valorous Unit Award in support of his application.

CONSIDERATION OF EVIDENCE:

1. The applicant enlisted in the Regular Army on 14 September 1987. He trained as a mechanic and remained on active duty through continuous reenlistments. He served in Afghanistan from 29 March 2005 to 26 March 2006 and retired on 31 January 2008 in the rank of master sergeant.

2. The applicant's DD Form 214 does not show the Valorous Unit Award as an authorized award.

3. A DA Form 2166-8 (NCO (Noncommissioned Officer) Evaluation Report) covering the period August 2005 to May 2006 shows the applicant was assigned to Headquarters and Support Company, 864th Engineer Battalion.

4. Headquarters, U.S. Army Human Resources Command Permanent Orders 100-01, dated 9 April 2008, show Headquarters and Support Company, 864th Engineer Battalion was cited for award of the Valorous Unit Award for actions during the period 7 July 2005 to 2 September 2005 in Afghanistan.

DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSIONS:

Orders show the applicant's unit was cited for the Valorous Unit Award while he was assigned to it. Therefore, his DD Form 214 should be corrected to show this unit award.

BOARD VOTE:

_____x__ ___x____ __x_____ GRANT FULL RELIEF

________ ________ ________ GRANT PARTIAL RELIEF

________ ________ ________ GRANT FORMAL HEARING

BOARD DETERMINATION/RECOMMENDATION:
