THE APPLICANT'S REQUEST, STATEMENT, AND EVIDENCE:
1. The applicant requests correction of his DD Form 214 (Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty) for the period ending 1 July 2007 to show award of the Iraq Campaign Medal.
2. The applicant states, in effect, that he served in Iraq from October 2003 to March 2004 and that he was not awarded the Iraq Campaign Medal. He points out that he served a 100-day deployment in Afghanistan and was awarded the Afghanistan Campaign Medal.
3. The applicant provides a DD Form 1610 (Request and Authorization for TDY [temporary duty] Travel of DOD [Department of Defense] Personnel); a citation for the Joint Service Commendation Medal; active duty orders; deployment orders; amendment orders; and a copy of his DD Form 214.
CONSIDERATION OF EVIDENCE:
1. The applicant was ordered to active duty from the U.S. Army Reserve on
27 May 2003 in support of Operation Noble Eagle. He served as an intelligence analyst in Afghanistan and Iraq and was released from active duty on 1 July 2007.
2. The applicant's DD Form 214 for the period ending 1 July 2007 does not show the Iraq Campaign Medal as an authorized award. Item 18 (Remarks) on his DD Form 214 shows he served in Iraq from 4 October 2003 to 31 March 2004.
3. Army Regulation 600-8-22 (Military Awards) states that individuals authorized the Iraq Campaign Medal must have served in direct support of Operation IRAQI FREEDOM (OIF). The area of eligibility encompasses all land area of the country of Iraq, and the contiguous water area out to 12 nautical miles, and all air spaces above the land area of Iraq and above the contiguous water area out to 12 nautical miles. The Iraq Campaign Medal period of eligibility is on or after 19 March 2003 to a future date to be determined by the Secretary of Defense or the cessation of OIF. A bronze service star is authorized for the following campaigns: Liberation of Iraq 19 March 2003 1 May 2003; Transition of Iraq
2 May 2003 28 June 2004; Iraqi Governance 29 June 2004 15 December 2005; and National Resolution 16 December 2005 Date to be determined.
DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSIONS:
Based on his service in Iraq, the applicant is eligible for award of the Iraq Campaign Medal with one bronze service star.
