		IN THE CASE OF:

		BOARD DATE:	16 September 2008

		DOCKET NUMBER: AR20080006891

THE BOARD CONSIDERED THE FOLLOWING EVIDENCE:

1. Application for correction of military records (with supporting documents provided, if any).

2. Military Personnel Records and advisory opinions (if any).

THE APPLICANT'S REQUEST, STATEMENT, AND EVIDENCE:

1. The applicant requests the Iraq Campaign Medal.

2. The applicant states that he served in Bagdad from 19 January 2006 to
25 August 2006.

3. The applicant provides his separation document (DD Form 214), and the orders which deployed him to Iraq (with amendment).

CONSIDERATION OF EVIDENCE:

1. The applicant’s military records show that he enlisted in the Regular Army on 23 June 1987, was awarded the military occupational specialties of Avenger Crewmember and Special Forces Communications Sergeant, and was promoted to pay grade E-7.

2. He was honorably released from active duty on 30 June 2007 and placed on the Retired List the following day for years of service.

3. The DD Form 214 he was issued does not list the Iraq Campaign Medal. However, it shows the applicant served in Iraq from 19 January 2006 to
25 August 2006.

4. Army Regulation 600-8-22 (Military Awards) states that individuals authorized the Iraq Campaign Medal must have served in direct support of Operation IRAQI FREEDOM (OIF). The area of eligibility encompasses all land area of the country of Iraq, and the contiguous water area out to 12 nautical miles, and all air spaces above the land area of Iraq and above the contiguous water area out to 12 nautical miles. The Iraq Campaign Medal period of eligibility is on or after 19 March 2003 to a future date to be determined by the Secretary of Defense or the cessation of OIF.

DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSIONS:

1. It is evident that the applicant served in Iraq during a period authorized the Iraq Campaign Medal because his DD Form 214 shows the applicant served in Iraq from 19 January 2006 to 25 August 2006.

2. As such, it would be appropriate to add the Iraq Campaign Medal to his DD Form 214.

BOARD VOTE:

BOARD DETERMINATION/RECOMMENDATION:
