THE APPLICANT'S REQUEST, STATEMENT, AND EVIDENCE:
1. The applicant requests correction of his Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty (DD Form 214) to recognize his service in Iraq.
2. The applicant states that he served in Iraq from 5 September 2006 through
6 October 2007.
3. The applicant provides copies of his orders and certificate awarding him the Army Commendation Medal for his service in Iraq, and an extract from his Army Knowledge Online Account showing his period of deployment, in support of his application.
CONSIDERATION OF EVIDENCE:
1. On 6 January 2000, the applicant enlisted in the Regular Army. He completed his initial training and was awarded military occupational specialty (MOS) 13F (Fire Support Specialist).
2. On or about 21 June 2000, the applicant was assigned for duty as a fire support specialist with the 6th Field Artillery Battalion, in the Federal Republic of Germany (FRG).
3. Records show that the applicant was further deployed to Iraq where he drew imminent danger pay during the period from 1 September 2006 to 31 October 2007. He returned to the FRG on 8 October 2007.
4. On 11 December 2007, the applicant was discharged from active duty. He had attained the rank of sergeant, pay grade E-5, and had completed 7 years,
11 months, and 6 days of creditable active duty, of which 7 years, 5 months, and
21 days of this service was served overseas in the FRG and Iraq.
5. Item 13 (Decorations, Medals, Badges, Citations and Campaign Ribbons Awarded or Authorized) of his DD Form 214 lists the Army Commendation Medal (three awards), Army Achievement Medal, Army Good Conduct Medal (two awards), National Defense Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon, and the Overseas Service Ribbon. It does not list the Iraq Campaign Medal.
6. Army Regulation 600-8-22 (Military Awards) provides, in pertinent part, for award of the Iraq Campaign Medal. Award of the Iraq Campaign Medal is authorized for service in direct support of Operation Iraqi Freedom on or after 19 March 2003 to a future date to be determined by the Secretary of Defense or the cessation of the operation. The area of eligibility encompasses all land area of the country of Iraq and the contiguous sea area out to 12 nautical miles and the air space above these areas. To qualify for award of this campaign medal, service members must have been assigned or attached to or mobilized with units operating in these areas of eligibility for 30 consecutive days or for 60 non-consecutive days or meet one of the following criteria: a) be engaged in combat during an armed engagement, regardless of the time in the area of eligibility; b) be medically evacuated from the area of eligibility for wounds or injuries resulting from participation in an operation or official duties; or c) participates as a regularly assigned air crewmember flying sorties into, out of, within or over the area of eligibility in direct support of the military operations [each day of operations counts as one day of eligibility]. This campaign medal may be awarded posthumously.
7. Army Regulation 635-5 (Separation Documents) prescribes the separation documents prepared for Soldiers upon retirement, discharge, or release from active military service or control of the Army. It establishes standardized policy for the preparation of the DD Form 214. It states that, for an active duty Soldier deployed with his or her unit during their continuous period of active service, the statement "SERVICE IN (NAME OF COUNTRY DEPLOYED) FROM (inclusive dates for example, YYYYMMDD - YYYYMMDD)" will be entered in item 18 (Remarks).
DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSIONS:
1. Records show that the applicant served during a qualifying period for award of the Iraq Campaign Medal. Therefore, he is entitled to award of this medal and correction of his records to show this award.
2. The applicant served a qualifying period of service in Iraq. Therefore, he is entitled to correction of his records to show his inclusive period of deployment to Iraq.

BOARD DETERMINATION/RECOMMENDATION:
The Board determined that the evidence presented was sufficient to warrant a recommendation for relief. As a result, the Board recommends that all Department of the Army records of the individual concerned be corrected by:
a. awarding him the Iraq Campaign Medal and showing this award on his DD Form 214; and
b. adding "SERVICE IN IRAQ FROM 20060901 - 20071031 in Item 18 of his DD Form 214,
