It states, in pertinent part, that a bronze service star is authorized with this award for each RVN campaign a member is credited with participating in. However, there are no orders, or other documents on file that show he was ever recommended for, or awarded either the CIB or CMB while he was serving on active duty. The evidence of record confirms the applicant’s combat service in the RVN; however, combat service alone does not support award of the CMB or CIB.

The applicant states that he was trained as an infantryman and served in the Republic of Vietnam in an infantry unit. The applicant submitted an undated self-authored statement testifying to his personal engagement in active duty ground combat against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam, which was not previously reviewed by the ABCMR; therefore, it is considered new evidence and as such warrants consideration by the Board. Evidence of record shows that the applicant was awarded the MOS...

He provides his DD Form 214; a newspaper article showing he was awarded two Purple Hearts, a BSM for heroism, and an Air Medal; and a 1 st Cavalry Division Vietnam Combat Certificate as supporting evidence. There is no evidence of record to show the applicant was awarded a second Purple Heart, a second and third Air Medal, or the BSM for heroism. The applicant was not assigned to a unit during a period of time that unit was awarded the PUC.

The applicant requests that his records be corrected to reflect award of the Combat Infantryman Badge. He states that he served 12 months in Vietnam and was issued the Combat Infantryman Badge but it was never documented on his DD Form 214 (Armed Forces of the United States Report of Transfer or Discharge). There is, however, no indisputable evidence in available records that the applicant ever “satisfactorily performed” his duties as an infantryman while his “unit was engaged in active...

The applicant states the Combat Infantryman Badge should be added to his records. His citation for the award of the Army Commendation Medal with "V" Device clearly shows he was personally present and under hostile fire while serving as a machine gunner in an infantry company actively engaged in ground combat with the enemy. As a result, the Board recommends that all Department of the Army records of the individual concerned be corrected by amending his DD Form 214 with an effective date of...

General Orders Number 1494, United States Army Vietnam, dated 8 November 1965, awarded the applicant the Purple Heart for wounds received on 6 November 1965, in connection with military operations against a hostile force. It does not show award of a second Purple Heart, Army Commendation Medal, Army Good Conduct Medal, or an individual award of the Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross with Silver Star. The applicant states, in effect, that he was awarded a second Bronze Star Medal for heroism and he has orders for two Air Medals he was awarded during his service in Vietnam; however, the awards are not shown on his discharge document. Therefore, it would be appropriate to correct his records to show this unit award. As a result, the Board recommends that all Department of the Army records of the individual concerned be corrected by: a. awarding the applicant the Good Conduct Medal for...
