      The Board considered the following evidence:

      Exhibit A - Application for correction of military records.

      Exhibit B - Military Personnel Records (including advisory opinion,
if any).

THE APPLICANT'S REQUEST, STATEMENT, AND EVIDENCE:

1.  The applicant requests award of the Purple Heart.

2.  The applicant states he was wounded after making a combat parachute
jump in Korea and was initially treated at a Marine hospital.  He states he
returned to his unit without any papers to prove his hospital stay.

3.  The applicant provides no evidence in support of his request.

CONSIDERATION OF EVIDENCE:

1.  Records available to the Board indicate the applicant entered active
duty on 11 May 1950 and arrived in Korea in October 1950 where he was
assigned to the 187th Regimental Combat Team.

2.  Although orders were not contained in records available to the Board
his Service Records confirms that he was awarded the Combat Infantryman
Badge on 29 March 1951 and the badge was confirmed in orders published by
the 187th Regiment Combat Team.  The badge, however, was omitted from his
separation document.

3.  Medical records contained in the applicant's file confirm that he was
wounded in action on 25 May 1951 in Korea when an enemy grenade exploded
nearby and he sustained a laceration to his scalp.  He was returned to duty
on 8 June 1951.  There is no indication he was ever awarded the Purple
Heart.

4.  The applicant ultimately returned to the United States and on 11 May
1953 was honorably discharged.  His separation document does not reflect
entitlement to the Purple Heart and item 29 (wounds received as a result of
action with enemy forces) reflects "NONE."

5.  Army Regulation 600-8-22 (Military Awards) provides, in pertinent part,
that the Purple Heart is awarded for a wound sustained while in action
against and enemy or as a result of hostile action.  Substantiating
evidence must be provided to verify that the wound was the result of
hostile action, the wound must have required treatment, and the medical
treatment must have been made a matter of official record.

6.  Army Regulation 600-8-22 (Military Awards) as amended provides that the
National Defense Service Medal is awarded for honorable active service for
any period between 27 July 1950 through 27 July 1954.
7.  As a matter of information, on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of
the Korean War, the Government of the Republic of Korea issued the Korean
War Service Medal to pay tribute to eligible Korean War veterans for their
historic endeavors to preserve the freedom of the Republic of Korea and the
free world.  On 20 August 1999, the Department of Defense approved
acceptance and wear of this foreign award to eligible United States
veterans of the Korean War, or their surviving next of kin.  The medal is
provided at no cost to the veterans.  The Department of Defense has
assigned responsibility to the Department of the Air Force for distribution
of the Korean War Service Medal to eligible veterans or their surviving
next of kin.  To apply, veterans must provide a copy of their discharge
paper (Department of Defense Form 214) to the Awards and Decorations
Section, Headquarters, Air Force Personnel Center, 550 C Street West, Suite
12, Randolph Air Force Base, Texas 78150-4714.  A sample request form is
being provided to the applicant.  Once the Korean War Service Medal has
been authorized by the Department of the Air Force, the applicant may apply
to the Army Board for Correction of Military Records to add this foreign
award to his separation document.

DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSIONS:

1.  The evidence shows the applicant was wounded in action in Korea on 25
May 1951 and as such, is entitled to an award of the Purple Heart.  Item 29
on his separation document should also be corrected accordingly.

2.  The evidence also shows the applicant was awarded the Combat
Infantryman Badge and that he is entitled to the National Defense Service
Medal.  His records should be corrected to reflect those items as well.

BOARD DETERMINATION/RECOMMENDATION:

The Board determined that the evidence presented was sufficient to warrant
a recommendation for relief.  As a result, the Board recommends that all
Department of the Army records of the individual concerned be corrected:

      a.  by awarding him the Purple Heart for wounds sustained on 25 May
1951 while in Korea;


      b.  by showing in item 29 on his separation document "25 May 1951,
      Korea" vice NONE;


      c.  by showing that he was awarded the Combat Infantryman Badge; and


      d.  by showing that he is entitled to the National Defense Service
      Medal.
