Army Regulation 600-8-22 (Military Awards) provides, in pertinent part, that the Bronze Star Medal is awarded for heroism and for meritorious achievement or service in military operations against an armed enemy. Therefore, the FSM is entitled to correction of his records to show three additional bronze service stars, to be affixed to his Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal. There is no evidence that the FSM was awarded, or recommended for, a separate award of the Bronze Star Medal.

The applicant requests, in effect, that his military records be corrected to show the rank of Technician 5 th Grade (TEC 5). I certify that hereinafter is recorded the true and complete record of the proceedings of the Army Board for Correction of Military Records in the case of the above-named individual. His WD AGO Form 53-55 also lists the Purple Heart as one of his decorations; however, it also includes a “NO RECORD” entry which indicates that there was no record of the applicant being entitled to the award prior to his discharge. Although his WD AGO Form 53-55 indicates that, at the time of his discharge,...

The applicant requests correction of his records to show that he sustained wounds to his right leg in action during World War II. There are no orders in records available to the Board which show that he was awarded the Purple Heart. The Board also noted that the applicant authenticated his WD AGO Form 53-55 at the time of his separation from the Army and this document did not show award of the Purple Heart or that he was wounded as a result of hostile action.

The applicant states that she is requesting the FSM be awarded the Purple Heart posthumously for wounds received during World War II. On 26 July 2001, at his family’s request, the National Personnel Records Center issued all of the foregoing awards as well as the Army of Occupation Medal with Germany clasp and the World War II Honorable Service Lapel Button. Medical evidence shows that the FSM was treated for a combat related wound on 8 August 1944, and is therefore, entitled to the Purple...

The applicant's WD AGO Form 53-55, shows no award of the Purple Heart in block 33 (Decorations and Citations). The same regulation also provides for award of the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal. The 160th Infantry Regiment was awarded campaign credit for participation in the Luzon, Southern Philippines, and Bismarck Archipelago campaigns during the time the applicant was member of the unit.

This means, in effect, that the Bronze Star Medal is to be awarded to individuals who were authorized either badge for service during World War II. Block 34 shows the entry "None" for wounds received in action. Records show the applicant was awarded the Bronze Star Medal.
