2. The applicant requests that his report of separation (DD Form 214) be corrected to reflect the award of the Navy Presidential Unit Citation (NPUC) that was awarded to his unit for the period he was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 32d Infantry Regiment.
3. The applicant states that he was assigned to the 32d Infantry Regiment during the Chosin Resevoir engagement, for which his unit was awarded the NPUC.
4. The applicant’s military records, though mostly destroyed in the 1973 fire at the National Personnel Records Center, in St. Louis, Missouri, show that he enlisted on 10 April 1950, for a period of 3 years.
5. Although the available records do not contain the exact dates he served in Korea, they do show that he was awarded the Combat Infantryman Badge (CIB) on 25 October 1950 and the Bronze Star Medal with "V" device for his heroic actions on 11 January 1951, while serving with the Armored Tank Company of the 32d Infantry Regiment.
6. The applicant was injured in combat on 8 March 1951, near Amidong, Korea, and was subsequently evacuated to the United States for treatment. He was awarded the Purple Heart for that injury.
7. He was honorably discharged in the rank of sergeant on 16 April 1953, after serving 3 years and 7 days of active service, of which 1 year, 2 months and 21 days were foreign service.
8. Department of the Army Pamphlet 672-1 (Unit Citation and Campaign Participation Credit Register-Korean War Era) was published to assist commanders and personnel officers in determining or establishing the eligibility of individual members for campaign participation credit, assault landing credit, and unit citation badges awarded during the Korean Conflict. Table 1 (Army Units in Numerical Order) of the pamphlet indicates that subsequent to the applicant’s departure from Korea, his unit was awarded the NPUC for the period of 27 November to 11 December 1950.
CONCLUSIONS:
1. The Board finds that there is sufficient evidence to show that the applicant was serving with the 32d Infantry Regiment during the period it was awarded the NPUC. Therefore, it would be in the interest of justice to correct his records at this time to show that award.
2. In view of the foregoing, the applicant’s records should be corrected as recommended below.
RECOMMENDATION: That all of the Department of the Army records related to this case be corrected by showing that the individual concerned was awarded the NPUC.
