2. The applicant requests award of a "battle star" [currently known as a bronze service star) for his service with the 10th Mountain Division.
3. The applicant states that he was not awarded this "battle star". He claims that his tank and two others were attached to the 10th Mountain Division. He states that he drove the first tank into Milan, Italy and liberated prisoners. The applicant did not submit any documents in support of his application.
4. The applicant’s military records were lost or destroyed in the National Personnel Records Center fire of 1973. Records available to the Board were obtained from alternate sources and show he was inducted on 21 January 1944 and completed training as a medium tank crewman. He departed the United States on 10 December 1944 and arrived in the European-African-Middle Eastern Theater of Operations on 23 December 1944. The date of his departure from this theater is unavailable, but he returned to the United States on 31 July 1945. The applicant and was honorably discharged on 22 April 1946.
5. The applicant's WD AGO Form 53-55 (Enlisted Record and Report of Separation) shows he received credit for participation in the Po Valley Campaign (5 April to 8 May 1945) in item 32 (Battles and Campaigns).
6. His WD AGO 53-55 shows entitlement to the European-African-Middle Eastern Service Ribbon. There are no bronze service stars shown in
item 33 (Decorations and Citations) on his discharge document.
7. The applicant's WD AGO Form 53-55 shows he was assigned to the 13th Tank Battalion during World War II. There is no evidence available to the Board which shows he was assigned or attached to the 10th Mountain Division.
8. Department of the Army Pamphlet 672-1 (Unit Citation and Campaign Participation Credit Register) dated 6 July 1961, shows, among other information, campaign credit during World War II. This document shows the unit to which the applicant was assigned, the 13th Tank Battalion, received campaign credit for the Northern Apennines Campaign (10 September 1944 to 4 April 1945).
9. Army Regulation 600-8-22 (Military Awards) authorizes a bronze service star, based on qualifying service, for each campaign listed in Appendix B of this regulation and states that authorized bronze service stars will be worn on the appropriate campaign or service medal, including the European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal.
CONCLUSIONS:
1. The Board considered the applicant's request for a "battle star" for his service with the 10th Mountain Division.
2. The applicant's WD AGO Form 53-55 shows he was assigned to the 13th Tank Battalion during World War II. There is no evidence available to the Board which shows the applicant was assigned or attached to the 10th Mountain Division.
3. The Department of the Army Pamphlet 672-1 (Unit Citation and Campaign Participation Credit Register) shows that the 13th Tank Battalion received campaign credit for the Northern Apennines Campaign.
4. The applicant's WD AGO Form 53-55 shows he received campaign credit for participation in the Po Valley Campaign.
5. Since the applicant has received credit for participation in two campaigns during his assignment in the European-African-Middle Eastern Theater of Operations, he is entitled to two bronze service stars for wear on his European-African-Middle Eastern Service Ribbon and correction of his records to show these awards.
6. Based on paragraph 3, above, the applicant is also entitled to correction of item 32 (Battles and Campaigns) on his WD AGO Form 53-55 to show the entry: "Northern Apennines."
7. In view of the foregoing findings and conclusions, it would be appropriate to correct the applicant’s records, but only as recommended below.
RECOMMENDATION:
1. That all of the Department of the Army records related to this case be corrected:
a. by showing the individual concerned was awarded the European-African-Middle Eastern Service Ribbon with two bronze service stars; and
b. by amending item 32 (Battles and Campaigns) on his discharge document to show the entry "Northern Apennines."
2. That so much of the application as it relates to a bronze service star for service with the 10th Mountain Division be denied.
