2. The applicant requests that the Purple Heart be added to his Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty, DD Form 214.
3. The applicant states that he was wounded on 18 August 1967 while on a search and destroy mission by a hostile booby trap.
4. The applicant’s military records show that he enlisted in the Regular Army on 29 September 1961.
5. The applicant arrived in Vietnam and was assigned to Company A, 3d Battalion, 39th Infantry, 9th Infantry Division on 28 March 1967. General Orders 89, 3d Field Hospital dated 21 August 1967 awarded him the Purple Heart for wounds received in action on 18 August 1967. He departed Vietnam on or about 24 November 1967. He retired on 1 October 1981. Neither the Purple Heart nor any unit awards are listed on his DD Form 214 for the period ending 30 September 1981.
6. Department of the Army Pamphlet 672-3 shows that the 3d Battalion, 39th Infantry was awarded the Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross with Palm Unit Citation for the period 1 December 1966 – 30 June 1968 and the Republic of Vietnam Civil Actions Honor Medal, First Class Unit Citation for the period 19 December 1966 – 28 June 1969.
CONCLUSIONS:
1. The evidence of record shows the applicant was awarded the Purple Heart on General Orders 89, 3d Field Hospital dated 21 August 1967 for wounds received in action on 18 August 1967.
2. The evidence of record also shows that the applicant was assigned to a unit during a period of time that unit was awarded the Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross with Palm Unit Citation and the Republic of Vietnam Civil Actions Honor Medal, First Class Unit Citation. These unit awards should also be listed on his DD Form 214 for the period ending 30 September 1981.
3. In view of the foregoing, the applicant’s records should be corrected as recommended below.
RECOMMENDATION:
That the applicant’s DD Form 214 for the period ending 30 September 1981 be amended to add the Purple Heart, the Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross with Palm Unit Citation and the Republic of Vietnam Civil Actions Honor Medal, First Class Unit Citation.
