2. The applicant requests reconsideration of his request that the Purple Heart (PH) be added to his Report of Separation, WD AGO Form 53-55. Incorporated herein by reference are military records which were summarized in a memorandum prepared to reflect the Board's original consideration of his case on 20 November 2001 (docket number AR2001060340).
3. Special Orders 13, Headquarters, 2d Armored Division dated 12 February 1945 awarding the applicant the PH for wounds received on 3 November 1944 were located at the National Archives, College Park, MD.
4. Army Regulation 600-45, then in effect, provided, in pertinent part, for the award of the Bronze Star Medal (BSM) to members of the armed forces who, after 6 December 1941 and prior to 3 September 1945, have been cited in orders or in a formal certificate for meritorious or exemplary conduct in ground combat against the armed enemy. A citation in orders for the Combat Infantryman Badge or Medical Badge awarded in the field during the period of actual combat against the armed enemy is considered as a citation for exemplary conduct in ground combat.
CONCLUSIONS:
1. The evidence of record shows the applicant was awarded the PH for wounds received on 3 November 1944. His WD AGO Form 53-55 should be amended to add the PH and to show he was wounded. Because he was awarded the Combat Infantryman Badge, he is eligible for award of a second BSM.
2. In view of the foregoing, the applicant’s records should be corrected as recommended below.
RECOMMENDATION:
That the applicant’s WD AGO Form 53-55 be amended to add the PH and a second BSM and to show he was wounded in action on 3 November 1944.
