2. The applicant requests correction of his military records to show award of the Purple Heart.
3. The applicant states that he was wounded in Vietnam and a one star General pinned the Purple Heart on him in the hospital; however, this award was not entered in his records. In support of his application, he submits a copy of his DD Form 214 (Report of Transfer or Discharge).
4. The applicant’s military records show that he was inducted on 3 March 1966. He served as an infantry indirect fire crewman in Vietnam from 18 August 1966 through 11 August 1967 and was honorably released on 1 March 1968.
5. The applicant’s DD Form 214 does not show the Purple Heart as an authorized award.
6. 1st Cavalry Division (Airmobile) General Orders Number 3680, dated
4 November 1966, show the applicant was awarded the Purple Heart for wounds received on 20 October 1966.
7. Department of the Army Pamphlet 672-3 (Unit Citation and Campaign Participation Credit Register) shows the applicant is entitled to award of the Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross with Palm Unit Citation based on Department of the Army General Orders Number 70, dated 1969. This award is not shown on his discharge document.
CONCLUSIONS:
1. The applicant was awarded the Purple Heart for wounds received on
20 October 1966 in Vietnam. Therefore, the applicant is entitled to correction of his military records to show this award.
2. The applicant’s unit was cited for the Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross with Palm Unit Citation while he was assigned to it. Therefore, the applicant is entitled to correction of his military records to show this unit citation.
3. In view of the foregoing, the applicant’s records should be corrected as recommended below.
RECOMMENDATION:
That all of the Department of the Army records related to this case be corrected
by showing that the individual concerned was awarded the Purple Heart and the Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross with Palm Unit Citation.
