2. The applicant requests that his records be corrected to show ten awards of the Air Medal.
3. The applicant states that his DD Form 214 (Report of Separation) only shows one award of the Air Medal. He submits copies of his DA Forms 759-1 (Individual Flight Record) in support of his application.
4. The applicant’s military records show that he served in Vietnam from 15 January 1969 through 14 August 1970 as a heavy lift helicopter crewmember. He received the basic award of the Air Medal for the period 4 February to 8 June 1969. He was separated from active duty effective 8 October 1976. His DD Form 214 only shows entitlement to one award of the Air Medal.
5. The applicant’s DA Forms 759-1 show that effective 8 June 1969 he had participated in 50 hours of aerial flight. These same DA Forms 759-1 also show that his flight records were closed out effective 28 July 1970 with a total of 538 hours of identical mission aerial flights.
6. U. S. Army Republic of Vietnam (USARV) Regulation 672-1 provided guidance for award of the Air Medal during the applicant’s service. The regulation provided for award of the initial Air Medal and subsequent awards for sustained operations by flight crewmembers who completed a minimum of 50 hours of flight time while engaged in certain type missions.
7. Army Regulation 600-8-22, now in effect, provides that subsequent awards of the Air Medal will be recognized by numerals starting with 2 to denote the second award.
CONCLUSIONS:
1. The applicant was awarded his initial Air Medal on completion of 50 hours of aerial flight. He had accumulated in excess of 500 hours of aerial flight during his service in Vietnam.
2. Based on the guidance provided by USARV Regulation 672-1, it appears that the applicant is entitled to ten awards of the Air Medal. Based on the guidance provided by Army Regulation 600-8-22, the applicant is entitled to have his records corrected to show the Air Medal with numeral 10.
3. In view of the foregoing, the applicant’s records should be corrected as recommended below.
RECOMMENDATION:
That all of the Department of the Army records related to this case for the individual concerned be corrected by showing that he is entitled to the Air Medal with numeral 10.
