2. The applicant requests, in effect, that his Report of Separation from the Armed Forces of the United States, DD Form 214 be corrected to show the Purple Heart award.
3. The applicant states in effect, that he would like to have his DD Form
214 corrected to show the Purple Heart award. He was wounded while serving in Korea. He was awarded the medal; however, his DD Form 214 does not show the award.
4. The applicant’s military records show that he was inducted into the Army of the United States on 19 September 1950. He completed the required training and was awarded military occupational specialty 1824 (Mess Steward).
5. The applicant’s DD Form 214, item 29 (Wounds Received as a Result of Action with Enemy Forces) shows that he was wounded on 4 March 1951.
while serving in Korea. The applicant was wounded in his the left leg by shrapnel.
6. The Office of the Surgeon General Hospital Admission Cards shows that the applicant was admitted/treated on 4 March 1951 for injuries received as a result of hostile action. The Admission Cards shows that the applicant was wounded
in the lower extremity (his leg) by explosive projectiles.
7. On 19 June 1952, the applicant was discharged from active duty. He completed 1 year, 9 months and 1 day of creditable service.
8. Army Regulation 600-8-22 provides, in pertinent part, that the Purple Heart is awarded for a wound sustained as a result of hostile action. Substantiating evidence must be provided to verify that the wound was the result of hostile action, the wound must have required treatment, and the medical treatment must have been made a matter of official record.
CONCLUSIONS:
1. The evidence of record clearly shows that the applicant was wounded as a result of hostile action on 4 March 1951 while serving in Korea. Therefore, he is entitled to correction of his record to show the award.
2. In view of the foregoing, the applicant’s records should be corrected as recommended below.
RECOMMENDATION:
That all of the Department of the Army records related to this case be corrected by amending the applicant’s DD Form 214 to show that he was awarded the Purple Heart Medal.
