2. The applicant requests that his DD Form 214 (Report of Separation from the Armed Forces of the United States) be corrected to reflect award of the Purple Heart. He states he received the medal from St. Louis and submits a copy of the decoration, inscribed with name, in support of his request.
3. Information available to the Board indicates he served in Korea between January and April 1952. According to item 29 (wounds received as a result of action with enemy forces), on his DD Form 214, he sustained a shell fragment wound to his left nostril on 8 February 1952. A Korean Casualty File confirms he received medical treatment for the injury. There is, however, no information which confirms he was awarded the Purple Heart. He was discharged from active duty on 1 May 1952.
4. Army Regulation 600-8-22 provides, in pertinent part, that the Purple Heart is awarded for wounds sustained as a result of hostile action. Substantiating evidence must be provided to verify that the wound was the result of hostile action, the wound must have required treatment by a medical officer, and the medical treatment must have been made a matter of official record.
CONCLUSIONS:
1. There is sufficient evidence to conclude the applicant was wounded as a result of hostile action while in Korea and as such is entitled to an award of the Purple Heart.
2. In view of the foregoing, the applicant’s records should be corrected as recommended below.
RECOMMENDATION:
That all of the Department of the Army records related to this case be corrected by awarding the individual concerned the Purple Heart.

He states that although his separation document does not indicate that he was wounded in action, a Western Union Telegram to his spouse confirms that he was wounded. There is sufficient evidence to confirm that the applicant was injured as a result of hostile action on 12 April 1952 and as such the Board concludes it would be appropriate, and in the interest of justice, to award the applicant the Purple Heart. The evidence also confirms the applicant is entitled to the National Defense...

That award was omitted from the applicant's DD Form 214. Once the Korean War Service Medal has been authorized by the Department of the Air Force, the applicant may apply to the Army Board for Correction of Military Records to add this foreign award to his DD Form 214. There is, however, no evidence, and the applicant has not provided any, which confirms that he was ever recommended for, or award, the Bronze Star Medal.

When the Korean War Service Medal is authorized by the Department of the Air Force, the applicant may apply to the Army Board for Correction of Military Records to add this foreign unit award to his DD Form 214. The Board accepts the Korean casualty roster and the applicant's DD Form 214 as substantiating evidence that shows he was wounded and was treated for a wound resulting from hostile action. That all of the Department of the Army records related to this case be corrected by awarding...

The applicant’s military records are not available to the Board for review. The evidence available to the Board confirms that the applicant was wounded as a result of hostile action on 19 September 1952 in North Korea and that he was awarded the Purple Heart in October 1952. As a result, the Board recommends that all Department of the Army records of the individual concerned be corrected: a. by showing that he was awarded the Purple Heart; b. by showing that he is entitled to the National...

The applicant requests correction of military records as stated in the application to the Board and as restated herein. The Board notes that according to information provided by the applicant, he was hospitalized in Japan from 6 April 1951 until 5 September 1951, a period of 6 months, and yet there is not one piece of evidence confirming that hospitalization; no SGO files, no treatment records, and no admission documents. In the absence of more conclusive evidence, such as an eyewitness...

The applicant's DD Form 214 (Armed Forces of the United States Report of Transfer or Discharge), with an effective date of 17 March 1952, does not show entitlement to award of the Purple Heart. Therefore, the applicant is entitled to correction of his records to show award of the...
