2. The applicant requests correction of his military records to reflect award of the a fourth Army Achievement Medal and the Southwest Asia Service Medal.
3. Records available to the Board indicate he served on active duty between March 1990 and March 1994 and was assigned to Korea from June 1990 through June 1991. While in Korea the applicant was awarded two Army Achievement Medals (9100303-910326 and 900630-910605). Both awards were confirmed in orders published by the 2nd Infantry Division in Korea.
4. Following his tour of duty in Korea the applicant was assigned to Fort Bliss, Texas. While at Fort Bliss he deployed with his unit to Southwest Asia between 30 October and 17 December 1993 and awarded two additional awards of the Army Achievement Medal (910819-910823 and 9106-9403). The additional awards were confirmed in orders published at Fort Bliss.
5. On 5 March 1994 the applicant was released from active duty. His DD Form 214 reflects entitlement to only three awards of the Army Achievement Medal and does not reflect entitlement to the Southwest Asia Service Medal.
6. Army Regulation 600-8-22 provides that service in the Southwest Asia is to be recognized by award of the Southwest Asia Service Medal (SWASM) to Army members serving in the region between 2 August 1990 and 30 November 1995. Individuals on temporary duty are eligible
after 30 consecutive or 60 nonconsecutive days. A bronze service star is authorized for a Cease Fire Campaign period begun on 12 April 1991 and concluded on 30 November 1995.
CONCLUSIONS:
1. The evidence of record confirms the applicant was awarded four awards of the Army Achievement Medal although only three awards were recorded on his separation documents.
2. The evidence also confirms the applicant was deployed to Southwest Asia during a period for which the Southwest Asia Service Medal with one bronze service star was authorized.
3. In view of the foregoing, it would be appropriate to correct the applicantÂ’s records as recommended below.
RECOMMENDATION:
That all of the Department of the Army records related to this case be corrected by showing that the individual concerned was awarded four awards of the Army Achievement Medal and is entitled to the Southwest Asia Service Medal with one bronze service star.
